Shawn M. Thrasher, Ontario City Library

Candidate for Secretary

Candidate for President-Elect

Candidate for Secretary

Candidates for Member at Large

Tell us about your background and what made you want to run for the Board of the California Library Association?

I have been working in public libraries in California since I moved here from Kansas City in 2001.  I worked for several years at Pasadena Public Library as a teen librarian; then five years at Monrovia Public Library as the Youth Services Librarian.  I have worked at Ontario City Library since 2011, and currently serve as director.  I have much experience in public librarianship at all levels.  I can bring a depth of knowledge to the Board.  I am also currently on the board as a member at large.  I’m interested in running for Secretary because I think I bring organizational skills

to the position; I’m timely, punctual, and a strong writer.  I’m also always looking for ways to do things better or more easily. Finally, while  I’m not afraid to state my opinions, I’m always willing to back the final decisions.

What experience do you have that will serve you while completing your three-year term?

I have been active both locally and statewide in a variety of organizations over the years.  This includes Southern California Library Cooperative during my years working in Pasadena and Monrovia; a board member of the Children’s Literature Council of Southern California for many years; and an advisory board member of California Center for the Book. I’m currently in the Inland Library System (ILS) executive council, where I serve as member-at-large, as well as an active and vocal member of the ILS Administrative Council.  I’ve also been active in California Library Association for many years.  I’ve presented at multiple conferences, and most recently was the night track organizer for the Riverside conference.

What is the most important thing the Board of the California Library Association should do in the next three years, and how will you contribute?

I think after the pandemic, librarians will be hungering for in person connections and contact.  I think setting up CLA sponsored local meetings and hangout will be important to revitalize CLA after what will probably be several years of a pandemic.  Because I live in Orange County, work in San Bernardino County, and am near the east end of Los Angeles County and the west end of Riverside County.  This makes me a perfect candidate to host and arrange get togethers like this.

What has the California Library Association accomplished during the pandemic that should continue, and how will you help make that happen?

I think the virtual conference was an amazing accomplishment, and all things considered, was really strong.  I think having a virtual component to each conference will remain important. Being on the board, I can assist in the discussion and planning of these types of virtual events.
