Morgan Pershing, Santa Clara City Library

Board of Directors

Candidate Statement

The California Library Association is in flux. When asked to explain the benefits of being a CLA member, I find it a difficult question to answer. This is not mentioned to denigrate current offerings such as Lunch at the Library, CALIX, Summer Reading and Conference, but rather to shine the light on the idea that CLA can do more. A lot more.

Why should I be one of the people leading the charge? Because I am tenacious and believe in action over words. I am already working behind the scenes to buoy CLA and Conference as one of the administrators of the hugely successful California Libraries Facebook page. I am ready to hit the ground running, officially.

Some of the issues I hope to address as a Board Member are:

  • Making CLA accessible and valuable for all types of libraries in California
  • Making CLA accessible and valuable for all library workers, no matter their rung on the career ladder
  • Finding new ways add value to CLA for its members including improved opportunities for professional development, networking and innovative partnerships
  • Exploring new streams of revenue/funding needed to finance revitalized CLA offerings

Ultimately, I want to help turn being a member of CLA from a should into a must. There are examples of financially robust, successful and relevant state library associations in this country. I want to help CLA become one of the shining examples.

During her time as a librarian, Morgan Rose Pershing has served children, teens, adults and seniors and has worked in public, special and academic libraries. In her current role as an Adult Services Librarian at Santa Clara City Library, she has overseen award-winning grant projects, built an incredibly strong Adult Summer Reading Program, and created a space for artists within the library. Pershing is also faculty at SJSU’s iSchool, teaching classes on graphic novels and community partnerships. In addition, she is a Transforming Life after 50 Fellow and a Eureka! Leadership Institute Fellow (2011).

Pershing is actively involved in CLA, from helping to plan conference to serving on councils. Her current responsibilities include:

  • Member of Summer Reading Council (incoming chair 2017)

  • Member of Summer @ Your Library Best Practices Work Group

  • Member of the new California Center for the Book Advisory Council

Pershing has presented at conferences on many topics, and created webinars for CLA and other state library associations. She is an outspoken advocate of all things library.
