Diversity, Equity, and Leadership: Beyond the Basics

To complement the Nexus LAB half-day workshops, CLA will offer two full-day regional institutes based on the LLAMA 14 Foundational Leadership and Management Competencies: http://www.ala.org/llama/leadership-and-management-competencies.

 

As part of the 2017-18 Developing Leaders in California Libraries workshop series, CLA is pleased to offer another full-day regional institute focused on how leaders take risks, model inclusion, share vision and lead on equity and diversity.

Part 1 Beyond Diversity 101. Many of us have been involved with diversity training that focuses on cultural difference and respecting all perspectives.  While this is a good start, we cannot move toward true equity in our workplaces, organizations, and personal relationships until we address historical and institutional inequality.  In order to address the myriad ways that certain people are marginalized based on social identities such as race, gender, disability, religion, class, sexual orientation, etc, every one of us needs to understand our own identities, how we all demonstrate bias that is often unconscious, and how we are all capable of moving toward equity

Part II: Leading on Equity. Workplaces and organizations wanting to move toward equity and inclusion must encourage leadership at every level. However, it can be challenging to develop leaders and leadership in today's polarized social climate and with so many demands on people's time. We will explore how we can move from the hierarchical view of leadership, involving power, position, and authority, to a framework of every day leadership where we can all lead on equity and inclusion in ways that reflect our identities, abilities, and capacity.  We will also learn about the leader who is able to apply self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills to inform interpersonal interactions and most importantly, possesses the ability to create a culture where mistakes can be made and failures acknowledged. The day will feature a mix of presentation and interactive activities.

Presenter: Dr. Anne Phibbs

Anne is the Founder and President of Strategic Diversity Initiatives. Anne brings over 25 years’ experience helping organizations advance their equity, diversity, and inclusion goals. She is adept at assessing an organization’s strengths and challenges and tailoring her approach to its context, culture, and goals. www.strategicdi.com

With extensive experience in training, teaching, curriculum development, and training of trainers, Anne has delivered hundreds of workshops and classes for thousands of participants in corporate, government, higher education, nonprofit, healthcare, and faith community settings.

Anne built a successful diversity and inclusion leadership program at the University of Minnesota.   Dr. Phibbs earned her PhD in Philosophy and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota and lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
