Guilty Pleasures: All the Readers Advisory You Need to Serve Your Romance-Loving Customers

Tuesday, May 12, 2015 | 1:00PM-2:00PM
Presented by the CLA Collection Development Interest Group

Presenters: Erin Christmas ,Santa Clarita Public Library and Wendy Crutcher, County of Los Angeles Public Library

Romance is one of the toughest genres for librarians to embrace as part of their readers advisory service. Many of us don't like or appreciate the genre, and so it's difficult to provide caring, knowledgeable RA. This is ironic since romance is one of the most popular areas of any public library collection, especially since the explosion in availability of e-books. Join two experienced readers advisory librarians who will give you all the scoop on romance and its subgenres; classic authors; up-and-comers; key titles; and trends that are keeping romance vibrant in the publishing and library worlds.

About the Presenters

Erin Christmas is the branch manager of the Old Town Newhall Library in Santa Clarita.  She loves to purchase fiction for the library collection and was the adult fiction selector for 3 years.  In addition, she does all of the e-book and e-audio purchasing for the Santa Clarita Public Library.  As a librarian with San Bernardino County she did system-wide Readers’ Advisory trainings for all staff.  Erin is a passionate reader of romance, romantic suspense, and women’s fiction.

Wendy Crutcher’s first professional library job involved purchasing adult fiction for a rural Michigan library system. After earning a B.A. in history and a master’s degree in library science from SUNY Buffalo, she fell into the job by accident and wasn’t entirely prepared. The biggest hole in her popular fiction knowledge was romance, so she started reading and quickly got hooked. Collection Development Coordinator for the County of Los Angeles Public Library, Wendy oversees a department that evaluates, selects and helps maintain the collections at 88 locations.  Wendy has been actively reviewing romance novels for over 15 years, has been featured on NPR’s On Point with Tom Ashbrook, and is a regular contributor at the romance community web site, Heroes & Heartbreakers. In 2011, the Romance Writers of America honored her with their annual Librarian of the Year Award.
