RE:                  News From the Capitol
As you may have been reading in the papers, the California State Senate has been battered this year with developments involving three of its members, two of whom were the subjects of complex FBI investigations. Several weeks ago the members of the Senate took the formal action to suspend their colleagues and the Senate President pro Tem announced plans to hold a day of intense, office-to-office ethics review. However, in scheduling this effort (for Wednesday, April 23), it has bumped a few committee hearings to different days. If you were planning on attending any of these library-related policy and Budget hearings at the State Capitol, please note the following changes:
The Senate Budget Subcommittee Number 1 on Education Finance was scheduled to take up the Governor’s proposal to connect all public libraries to a high-speed, broadband “backbone” operated by CENIC on Thursday, April 24 at 9:30 a.m. or upon adjournment. That hearing has now been changed to Tuesday, April 29th at 1:30 p.m. in Room 3191 at the State Capitol. (The comparable hearing in the Assembly Budget Subcommittee Number 2 on Education Finance has not been affected and will continue to be scheduled for next Wednesday, April 23 at 4 p.m. in Room 126.)
CLA’s sponsored library construction and renovation bond measure, SB 1455 by Senator DeSaulnier was scheduled to be heard in the Senate Governance and Finance Committee next week as well. However, that hearing date has similarly been moved and the bond bill will now be heard on Wednesday, April 30th at 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. – TBA in room 112.
Thank you to all library directors, friends groups, trustees, literacy advocates and others who have faxed your support letters to the members of the Budget subcommittees and the Senate Governance and Finance committee. We had asked you to cc: us on your SB 1455 letters via fax. We have received quite a few of your letters and they are well done. Please note we had a typo in one of our action alerts with regard to our fax number. The correct fax number for our office is (916) 448-4808. Sorry for any inconvenience you may have encountered due to our error. If you have not yet written your support letter for SB 1455, CLA’s official “support” letter now appears on the CLA website and may be used as a template.
