Interest Group Spotlight: Finance Committee

Almost every organization has a finance (or budget) committee, a group of dedicated volunteers who review the organization’s fiscal reports and independent audit reports. CLA’s Finance Committee is one of four Standing Committees that are called for under Article XI of the CLA Bylaws. Under the direction of the Treasurer, an elected position on the CLA Board, the committee’s duties include:

  • Assuring that CLA’s financial books and records of accounts are adequate and correct;
  • Overseeing the management of the association’s investments;
  • Reporting on the financial status of the association to the Board of Directors and membership.

The committee reports back to the board on any issues and can make recommendations to the board on financial matters as they affect CLA.  The Committee is also responsible for the updating of CLA’s Financial Handbook, a document last revised on June 17, 2013.

What does it take to be a member of the Finance Committee? The Committee’s composition is stated in the Bylaws:

  • Treasurer (serves as committee chair)
  • Vice-President/President-Elect
  • One Board member selected by the CLA Board of Directors
  • 2 non-board members

For the non-board members, we look for volunteers who “possess expertise in finance and budgeting.” And it helps if you really like going through financial reports with a fine-toothed comb and reading investment reports!

Current committee members include Beth Wrenn-Estes (Chair), Robert Karatsu (Vice-President/President Elect), Hilary Keith (CLA Director at Large), Kathy Gould (non-board member) and Vanessa Christman (non-board member).

All voting members of CLA are strongly encouraged to volunteer to serve on a committee!  It is important to step up and contribute time to CLA to keep the Association viable and effective. There is much to do to improve communication, transparency, membership and services.  President-Elect Robert Karatsu will soon be going through the task of making appointments to a variety of CLA committees. If you are interested in serving, please complete the online form available here:

I would encourage members to ask questions when you have them about CLA. Remember, as a member-driven organization, CLA depends on interested volunteers! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in contact.  Get involved today and start to Be The Change!
