A maximum of one scholarship is awarded each year. The recipient is awarded $3,000, a one-year student membership to CLA, and honored at the CLA annual conference.  The recipient is encouraged to enroll into CLA's Mentoring Program.

2015 Fellowship Recipient

Collette Salvatierra, University of California, Los Angeles

From a young age, Collette Salvatierra has overcome many barriers to achieve the American dream of higher education. Growing up in an immigrant Spanish-speaking household limited her learning and communication with her teachers.  Her mother thus turned to the resources at the Los Angeles Public Library to bridge the technological and knowledge gap she experienced growing up in South Central Los Angeles.  During the bus rides or even hikes to the Central Library, her mother would remind Collette and her brother that these steps would lead them to a better future. The library was a tangible means of moving beyond the poverty that surrounded her family.  With these lessons in mind, Collette starts UCLA’s MLIS program in fall of 2015 and looks forward to learning more about the flow and access of information, and outreach to underserved populations.  As a librarian, Collette aspires to bring to neighborhoods similar to those she grew up in, a means to surpass their economical limitations.
