January 28, 2015 - President's Column
Share |

It is a thrill and an honor to be the President of the California Library Association. I am excited to work with my fellow Board members and all California Libraries to make this the best professional organization.

We are coming off an incredible Reimagined and Reinvented conference in Pasadena and already planning to Swing into Action for the next conference in Sacramento November 3-5. With Derek Wolfgram as conference chair, you can be assured it is going to be awesome.

It has already been an encouraging start for libraries this year. The passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act paves was a big boon for libraries. It is the first federal legislation in over 50 years to provide funding for library programs in schools. On January 7, Governor Jerry Brown released his 2016-2017 budget with an additional $4.8 million identified for enhancing the California Library Services Act. These are two steps in the right direction but we still have a lot of work to do to make sure everyone understands and values the importance of libraries in our community. That is my charge this year and I will be challenging you all to get out there and advocate. Talk to your legislators, your community, your staff and your patrons and make sure the library story is told. 2016 in the year for California Libraries!!

Misty Jone, President
