Management Team Message

I recently had a conversation with a fairly new member of CLA. After we finished with the original question, she asked me “What happens next? How do I get involved with CLA?” She’s a student member, in her last year of her master’s program. After we finished our conversation, I continued thinking about her questions.

How do recent or soon-to-be graduates start to create their professional networks? Of course, as CLA’s executive director, I believe an important part of the process is getting involved in the California Library Association! If you’re a new member, there are opportunities available. Any membership-based organization relies on its members to drive it forward through their energies, their interests and their involvement.

What are some of the ways you can get involved in CLA? There are interest groups – in fact, there are currently 17 different interest groups ranging from library facilities to youth services to volunteer engagement. Don’t see an interest group that meets your needs? We’ve got that covered. You can propose a new interest group through a simple process. For more information on the various interest groups, visit

Or how about volunteering to be on a committee? CLA has both standing and working committees. There are 4 standing committees and 5 working committees. Want to do important advocacy work? The Advocacy and Legislation Committee is the one for you! This committee works with the CLA lobbyists to make sure that the California legislature knows how important libraries are to a thriving community! Do you enjoy the behind-the-scenes work that goes into putting a successful annual conference together? We’ve got just the ticket: the conference planning committee (and its various subcommittees) is always in need of enthusiastic, hard-working and creative folks.

So, new members – step up, volunteer, and start making those connections! It’s YOUR organization, become an active part of CLA!

Rosario Garza, Executive Director
California Library Association
