California Summer Reading Program

The 2013 Stuffed Animal Sleepover and Midnight Feast (because Reading Is So Delicious!)

Back by popular demand after last summer’s big success! Please join libraries across the state in hosting a Stuffed Animal Sleepover AND Midnight Feast this summer.

About the Stuffed Animal Sleepover and Midnight Feast

Inspired by the Reading Is So Delicious! Summer Reading theme, kids are encouraged to bring their stuffed animals to the library for a night of make believe and tasty treats (action figures and dolls welcome!).

Once the kids leave, their stuffed animals magically come alive in the library. Staff and/or teen volunteers take photos of the animals doing various activities after-hours, including enjoying a fun and healthy midnight feast. The next day, kids pick up their stuffed animals, along with a photo showing what the animals did all night, and/or a certificate of participation.

For added fun, libraries can host a family storytime and other programs for the kids when they drop off their animals, and/or a breakfast program when they pick them up. Be sure to send the stuffed animals home with a recipe card of one of the healthy snacks that were served at the sleepover so the kids can enjoy making the same snack at home!

This program is perfect for pre-school and school-age children, and teens make great volunteer program assistants.

Programming Ideas

Activity ideas for drop-off and pick-up day

Storytime with a bedtime theme (Encourage everyone to dress in pajamas!):

  • Alborough, Jez. Where's My Teddy? Walker, 1992.
  • Crimi, Carolyn. Principal Fred Won't Go to Bed. Marshall Cavendish Children, 2010.
  • Farrar, Alexis Deacon. While You Are Sleeping. Giroux, 2006.
  • Freedman, Claire. Night-Night, Emily! Tiger Tales, 2003.
  • Inches, Alison. The Stuffed Animals Get Ready for Bed. Harcourt, 2006.
  • Meyers, Susan. Bear in the Air. Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2010.
  • Waber, Bernard. Ira Sleeps Over. Houghton Mifflin, 1972.

Storytime with a food and feasting theme:

  • For a bounty of great reads inspired by food and feating, check out the children's bibliography in your Reading Is So Delicious! Resource Guide. Perhaps serve one of hte items from the Stuffed Animal Midnight Feast menu at your storytime.

Midnight feast and sleepover themed craft making and cooking activities:

  • Have kids cook up some simple healthy snacks - some for the stuffed animals and toys to eat at their sleepover, and some for the kids to enjoy.
  • Make a mini blanket: Have small squares of inexpensive fabric sheeting or paper for kids to decorate and make a blanket or pillow for their animal.

Movie night with a sleepover or an animals-come-to-life theme:

  • Night at the Museum
  • Toy Story
  • A non-feature length video/children’s TV episode with a sleepover theme

Note writing & picture drawing:

  • Have the kids write a good night note or wish for their stuffed animal and post it on the library wall. Some may prefer to draw a picture. Create a large tree on the library wall to display the notes.

Return the stuffed animals in a bag or tote bag:

  • Fill the bag with library info, bookmarks, a healthy recipe, perhaps a breakfast item (a piece of fruit) and a picture of their stuffed animal or action figure. The totes sold as summer reading incentives make the perfect bag for this!
