President’s Message

It’s Time to Vote!

As both President and President-Elect of the California Library Association, I have been incredibly impressed with the leadership and direction of CLA and its members. With the brilliant guidance and direction of your CLA Board of Directors, CLA Executive Director Carol Simmons, and our amazing partners at PIC, Linda Crowe and Rosario Garza, I can honestly say our association is on the right track. Yes, there are challenges ahead (maintaining membership, strong advocacy at the State level, and financial stability through tough fiscal times), but I am confident we have built a foundation upon which we will continue to grow and prosper.

What gives me that confidence? Well, in addition to the folks I just mentioned, there are some incredible candidates on this year’s election slate. The quality of the people who have come forward to volunteer their time and talent to the California Library Association is, in my opinion, unparalleled. I am led to believe that such strong candidates like these came forward because they, too, see how our association has changed for the better and is once again ready to be a model for other associations around the United States.

But having strong candidates is just one piece of the puzzle. Your participation through voting is no less critical. I understand that many of our members are struggling with city and county budget cuts. Some fear having their hours reduced, if not cut altogether. Others are dealing with even more difficult professional and personal issues and frustration. I get it. I’ve been there, too. But I believe that out of this frustration can come hope and action! So please, take action when the time comes and VOTE! To paraphrase Bono, lead singer of the band U2, our association is more malleable than you think and it’s waiting for you to hammer it into shape!
