Irene Zapata for CLA Board, Student Representative

Statement of Concerns

In the past year, I have learned a lot about libraries and developed a curiosity about how we as librarians can continue to be innovative as times proceed to change. I have gained a great deal of knowledge about librarianship from not only faculty and staff at UCLA and my professional mentors, but also my fellow classmates. Through insightful conversations both in and out of the classroom, my classmates have brought up a number of interesting points and got me thinking about new ideas and how to better serve our communities. LIS students come from all kinds of backgrounds, and with this backgrounds, they bring a fresh perspective to the field of libraries and information science. I believe that LIS students have something valuable to contribute, and for this reason, I would like to serve as a representative for LIS students and run for CLA Board Student Representative.

Irene Zapata's Background

Hello, my name is Irene Zapata and I am running for the CLA Board Student Representative. I graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and a minor in Spanish. In the past, I have worked as a sales associate at Express and volunteered at Torrance Public Library. Through my retail experience and volunteer work at the library, I developed a keen interest for working with the public and serving a community. Currently, I am a second year MLIS student at UCLA with an emphasis on public libraries and youth services. This summer, I completed an internship with the Youth Services Department at Santa Monica Public Library and will be interning with The Windward School in the fall. I am a strong advocate for children’s rights and their intellectual freedom. As a lover of popular literature and advocate for reading for pleasure, I believe in providing children and young adults with a wide array of reading material not limited to only those that are deemed “quality literature.” In addition to CLA, I am also a member of ALA, ALSC, YALSA, and APALA. This school year I will serve as the co-publicity officer for the ALA Student Chapter at UCLA and president for YACS (Young Adult and Children’s Services) at UCLA. In my free time, I enjoy singing and listening to music (all kinds, though pop music is my favorite) and reading YA books – I can always find something to relate to in a YA book!
