Tour of Bullocks Wilshire / Leigh H. Taylor Law Library

CLA's Library History Interest Group presented two tours of the historic 1929 Bullocks Wilshire building, including the restored library, on June 2, 2012.

The Art Deco building was designed by Los Angeles architects John and Donald Parkinson. The interior design was by Eleanor Lemaire and Jock Peters of the Feil and Paradise Company, and the ceiling mural of the porte cochere was painted by Herman Sachs.

The tour provided examples of adaptive reuse of an historical building for law school and library purposes. It was conducted by David McFadden, Senior Reference Librarian at Southwestern Law School and LHIG member. In addition to enjoying the tour, participants also convened for lunch at nearby Langer's Delicatessan-Restaurant.

Attendees said:

  • "We've toured the building before, but this time saw a lot more. David did an excellent job!"
  • "The building was beautiful and David made it come alive by sharing interesting facts on a variety of topics related to the building's history and use."
  • "What an incredible treat."
  • "David did a terrific job... He should seriously consider doing tours after he retires from libraries!"
