As part of the 2017-18 Developing Leaders in California Libraries workshop series, CLA is pleased to present a full-day regional institute focused on emotional intelligence as a component of leadership. An emotionally intelligent leader is effective in understanding and improving the way they perceive and manage their own and other people’s emotions. This leader is able to apply self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills to inform interpersonal interactions and most importantly, possesses the ability to create a culture where mistakes can be made and failures acknowledged. The workshop will feature a mix of presentation and interactive activities designed to help participants understand their level of emotional intelligence and how it applies in the workplace when building teams, leading change or shepherding through a strategy or vision.

Taught by experienced presenters Rivkah Sass and Jessica Jupitus of Sacramento Public Library, this workshop will be of value both to emerging and experienced leaders looking for tools to use every day to help their libraries develop and better serve the community. Supporting the theme of emotional intelligence, it will also touch on communication skills, team-building and conflict resolution, all essential skills for leaders.

The workshop is focused on leadership competencies identified by the Library Leadership & Management Association (LLAMA), a division of the American Library Association. The course is designed to complement regional workshops that have been delivered throughout the state in 2018 utilizing curriculum developed by the Nexus LAB initiative, a partnership of libraries, archives and museums.
