How’d You Get that Cool Job: Alternative Career Paths for the Information Professional - 2018 Edition


A career panel of four librarians from Academic and Special Libraries and other nontraditional environments will provide information regarding their day to day work and how they wound up in their current positions. Panelists will also provide attendees with information on how they can pursue similar careers.


Rachel Stark, M.S., Health Sciences Librarian, California State University – Sacramento

Rachel Keiko Stark is the Health Sciences Librarian at California State University, Sacramento. Previously, she worked at Kaiser Permanente as a Library Manager, at the Sacramento Public Library as a Youth Services Librarian, and at University of the Pacific as the Health Sciences Librarian. Rachel is a Spectrum Scholar and completed the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship. When she isn’t at work, she enjoys spending time with her dogs.

Sara Thompson, M.S., Manager, JPL Library, Archives & Records.

Sara Tompson has been an engineering and/or science librarian for most of her career and is currently starting her 5th year as the Manager of the Library, Archives & Records Section of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Previously she held library leadership roles at the University of Southern California, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the University of Illinois. Sara has been involved with the Special Libraries Association (SLA) since the 1990s; currently she is the Past-President of the Southern California Chapter and Chair-Elect of the Aerospace Section. She is an active private pilot with an instrument rating and enjoys flying her husband and friends around SoCal. She also loves cats and gardening.

Tess McCarthy, MLIS, SFO Terminal 1 Center, ACJV Document Control Manager

Tess McCarthy got her library degree from SJSU in December 2012. She worked in Stop Motion Animation and did comics. She also holds a BA in Behavioral Science which has formulated a foundation for understanding how people interact, communicate and behave.  In library school, Tess heavily focused on Information Seeking Behavior and used this philosophy in library reference & research, physical and digital archives, Digital Asset Management and, currently Information Management. Tess has worked for giants such as Google, The Hoover Institution Archives and, currently works as an Information Management consultant at SFO’s (San Francisco International Airport) Terminal 1 Project Controls project. Tess is a fiction writer and poet—she also illustrates and draws comics.  She’s often available to teach any comic class to anyone willing to learn the old-fashioned way.

Tina Lerno, MLIS, Librarian I – Digital Content Team at Los Angeles Public Library

Tina Lerno earned her master’s degree in Library and Information Science from SJSU in 2012. Her experience working in digital animation and graphic design provides her with a unique perspective on library services and user needs. She is currently part of the Los Angeles Public Library’s Digital Content team where she is responsible for web content and design. She was formerly a Young Adult Librarian for one of the branch libraries and now she says that the website is her branch. Tina is a native of Los Angeles, Ca. where she currently resides with her two children, three cats, and a digitized musical collection consisting of over 50,000 songs.
