Partnering with Ingram: Rethinking Technical Services, from Basics to the Next Great Thing!

Go on a tour of 10 Technical Services practices and re-think their relevance in today’s public library.  Many customers we follow today were established well before the modern day discovery layer with smart keyword indexing, the push toward a just in time service model rather than just in case, and increasingly fragmented budgets as so many formats of every title are available.  Do we still need to catalog the same way and spend so much money and time putting stickers and labels on books that we don’t want to linger on our shelves?  Review 10 common practices that your library may still be doing the same way in 2018 that it did in 1990 and hear about how some libraries are bucking those trends.

The presentation will be a 10-item countdown of things many of us do: genre stickers, pocket labels, local subject authority control, complicated cuttering rules, not knowing how our patrons search, etc.  An example of each will be given and then show what a library somewhere in the country is doing that has ceased or changed the practice.  For example, will explain how one library gave up authority control on their bib database when they figured out that 90% of their OPAC searches were keyword or title searching. Forecast for APIs, Discovery Layers, and Patron Driven Acquisitions, etc. will be assessed as well.

About the speaker:

Tricia Bengel began her library career at the age of 15 as a page in her hometown library. She worked there summers and weekends throughout high school and college, earning her MLS from the University of KY in 1996. She then started work for a library automation company and traveled the country training and implementing software. After a few years in State Libraries in KY and TN, Tricia worked as Assistant Director of Collections and Technology Services for Nashville Public Library where she had the honor of starting a ground breaking program called Limitless Libraries. In 2012, Library Journal named Tricia a Mover and Shaker for her work with this program. Tricia recently served on OCLC’s Global Council as one of only 3 public librarians.  She now works on the Sales team at Ingram Library Services, where she has the privilege of traveling the country visiting with libraries and talking about technical services!
