CLA Annual Conference
The California Library Association (CLA) will host their 110th Conference and Exhibition November 14 - 17 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, 150 West San Carlos Street. As the premiere continuing education event of the year, nearly 1,300 participants will have the opportunity to partake in more than 80 workshops and poster sessions; listen to notable guest speakers; and offered more than 200 premier products, services and technology in the CLA exhibit hall. The awards banquet will recognize authors, students, and library leaders with scholarships and awards bestowed by peers for the movers and shakers in the industry.
"The theme of the 2008 conference is Leading the Way," said Monique le Conge, president of the California Library Association. "CLA promises all conference attendees four days of unparalleled education as well as a great time in San Jose."
Workshops at this year's conference include Web 2.0 Tools; Marketing your Library; Customer Service Training for 21st Century Library Staff; Fundraising for your Library; Summer Reading Programs for Adults; and Crossing Borders: 21st Century International Librarianship. The conference's general session will kick off with authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 15. Other conference guest speakers include Daniel Pink, William Crossman and Jeannette Walls. The CLA Exhibit Hall vendors will offer solutions to help improve effectiveness and provide tools to prepare workplaces for the future. Exhibit hours begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, November 14 and end on Sunday, November 17 at 3 p.m.
The CLA awards and scholarship banquet is an opportunity for peers to recognize the best of the best in the industry. Awards and scholarships include:
- California Young Leader Medal - gives young readers the opportunity to honor their favorite books and authors, recommend them to others, and enjoy recreational reading.
- The John and Patricia Beatty Award - honors the author of a distinguished book for children or young adults that best promote an awareness of California and its people.
- The Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian - recognizes and promotes excellence in public library service by an individual librarian in a California public library.
- Outstanding Librarian In Support of Literacy - honors a librarian who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to support literacy.
- The PRexcellence Awards - honor libraries for their marketing and public relation materials.
- The President's Award - recognizes a group or individual such as a trustee, friend, or layperson who has demonstrated significant leadership in support of California libraries.
- The Member of the Year Award - honors a member of CLA for his / her leadership and achievement.
- Zoia Horn Intellectual Freedom Award - honors Californian people, groups, and organizations that have made significant contributions to intellectual freedom in California. This year's recipients stumbled on a serious case of federal censorship and fought to have it reversed.
- The CLA Scholarship for Minority Students In Memory Of Edna Yelland - supports ethnic minority students in the attainment of a graduate degree in library or information science. Candidates must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a master's program in an ALA accredited library school to be eligible. Three individuals will be recognized.
- The Begun Scholarship - supports continuing library school students who have demonstrated a commitment to becoming children's or young adult librarians in a California public library.
- The CLA Reference Services Press Fellowship - encourages college seniors, college graduates and beginning library school students to prepare for a career in reference / information service librarianship. Candidates must be a California resident attending or planning to attend an ALA-accredited library school masters program in any state or a resident of any state planning to attend or attending an accredited library school masters program in California. One fellowship of $3,000 is awarded.
The CLA conference includes a Recruitment Pavilion; opportunities for job applicants and employers to post available positions and conduct on-site interviews. A series of career-oriented workshops will convene on November 15 and 16, and are co-sponsored by the UCLA Department of Information Studies and San Jose University School of Library and Information Studies. A resume evaluation service will be offered to fine tune resumes for future employment opportunities.
