Former Placer County Librarian Dorothy Sanborn Passes Away

Dorothy Sanborn, 88, died on June 4th after a two-week bout with pneumonia. A longtime member of CLA, Sanborn worked in the Placer County Library System for over 50 years and was an active member of the Friends of the Auburn Library up until her passing.

Dorothy Sanborn was born in Nashville,Tenn., in 1920. Her family moved to El Paso, Texas in the 1930s, where she attended high school. She later graduated from Texas Western at El Paso, and went on to earn her master's degree in library science from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Dorothy served as Placer County Librarian from 1966 to 1989, the logest tenure of any Placer County Librarian. As County Librarian she engineered the merger with the Placer County Library and was intstrumental in helping the Alpine County library system get their library started. In 1987, the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners (CALTACT) named Dorothy Sanborn their State Librarian of the Year.

In 1989, Dorothy retired at age 69, but retirement for Dorothy did not mean taking a break from working, she joined the Peace Corps from 1991 to 1993, where she taught English at a rural junior high school in Thailand. After returning from Thailand, Dorothy became a volunteeer at the city of Lincoln's public library and then president of the Friends of Auburn Library. She had just completed her term as president when she passed away. Per Dorothy's request, no funeral or memorial services will be held.
