From the President: Legislative Day
As you no doubt have heard, Legislative Day is coming up and you still have time to sign up to participate. I hope that many of you who have never attended will make the time to come to Sacramento and join us as we talk with legislators and their staff members about libraries and how the legislators themselves affect us on a local level.
In a past blog about Day in the District, I described how you might approach visiting your representatives and the messages that we are planning to discuss. When you come to Legislative Day, you are given a great deal of information to help you prepare for your visits. Most likely, you'll be with many folks from the same district, and you will find that it's an interesting, educational opportunity to see another aspect of CLA's member and library support. I especially invite you to consider bringing Friends, Trustees, Commissioners, Foundation members, and library and literacy program users with you. Their story is often more compelling even than our own. In the past two jurisdictions where I've worked, the Board members who attended enjoyed the organized effort and learned more about the important work CLA does.
I want to point out that information from the Public Library Association Conference held recently in Minneapolis is available on their website. I encourage you to visit the site to see the handouts and other program attachments. As you may have heard, the weather held out and was sunny and relatively warm. By Opening Day, it was expected that there would be about 8" of snow.
On a more personal note, as of April 1, I am no longer in charge of Recreation (no foolin'!). While I have enjoyed the last three years, and have learned a lot about the professional field of recreation, my City's goal of building a new library is something that requires full-time attention. It's a completely unfunded goal, but a goal nonetheless. TAnd recreation deserves full-time attention, too. I'm happy to have more time to devote to library-related activities, especially CLA, and work, but I'm equally proud of some of the collaborative programs we've been able to start with the two departments working together.
