From the President

I now understand what a challenge it is to write a blog. Weekly is a huge challenge for me, so I'm appreciative of the folks who write more often. My kids tell me that I should be a little easier on myself, since I do so much: in addition to representing all of you for CLA, I have a day job as Director of Library & Community Services for the City of Richmond (I'm in charge of the following departments: Library, Recreation, Arts & Culture), teach a class online for the School of Library & Information Science at San Jose State University, am on the board of a library foundation (OK, that might not count, since it's part of my employment) and yes, have 3 teenagers. In the past three years, I've learned (& love) to play golf. I work on my house, and try to exercise daily. What's that saying about asking busy people to do something, so that you'll get it done?

This coming Monday, March 17, 2008, though, is one of my happiest moments.

Why? Richmond Public Library Branches will reopen on Monday, March 17, 2008! Please stop by to see our newly renovated, updated buildings during open hours and enjoy light refreshments on opening day. The branch libraries were closed in May 2004 during budget cutbacks that affected services citywide, when the City of Richmond found itself $35 million in debt. Now, they are even open more hours that when they closed, providing neighborhoods with much-needed access to services. "Grand Opening" celebrations will occur in April during National Library Week (April 13 - 19th), and will include special programs for all ages.

This is great news for the Library in Richmond, and, in an environment where many jurisdictions are facing cutbacks, a welcome positive story. We are, rightfully so, very proud of the accomlishment, which was not without some stuggle and lots of determined effort. If you are in the neighborhood, please feel free to drop by.
