Passing of Jay Cunningham

Recently we learned that Jay Cunningham passed away on November 5, 2007
in Las Vegas; he was 70 years old. Many of you will remember Jay as the
coordinator for both the Library Services and Technology Act and Public
Library Foundation programs in Library Development Services at the State
Library.

In 1978 Jay came to the State Library from the University of California
where he had directed the university-wide library automation program and
had been involved in several areas of UC's union catalog project. At
the State Library Jay was hired as a Principal Librarian and Assistant
Chief of the State Library Services Bureau, overseeing technical
services and also automation-related projects until the formation of the
library's Automation Office. In the early 1990s Jay transferred to
Library Development Services; he retired from state service in 2004.

Jay is remembered as diligent and hard-working as well as being a
seasoned commuter, traveling 150 miles round-trip everyday from his home
in Kensington to Sacramento and back. After leaving the State Library
he moved to a retirement community near Las Vegas where, according to
his daughter, he lived and enjoyed life to the fullest until his health
declined this year.

A memorial service is pending; if we receive more information we will
pass it on to you.

Susan Hildreth, State Librarian of California
