Senate Rules Votes Unanimously to Confirm Susan Hildreth
On Wednesday, April 20, 2005, the California Senate Rules Committee voted unanimously to recommend to the full Senate the confirmation of Susan Hildreth, former CLA President, as State Librarian of California.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Hildreth State Librarian on August 2, 2004, following the retirement of Dr. Kevin Starr on April 1, 2004.
The Senate Hearing Room in the State Capitol was packed with leading members of the library community, many of whom testified in support of Hildreth's confirmation.
In her testimony before the committee and the standing-room only crowd, Hildreth announced her vision for the California State Library and library services in California. Hildreth said that one of her key goals was to advocate for the California State Library. She also said that it was her responsibility to envision the future of all libraries and articulate that future to elected officials, library supporters, and library workers.
Hildreth has had a distinguished career in public librarianship. She most recently served as City Librarian at San Francisco Public Library. She formerly was Sacramento's Deputy Library Director, County Librarian in Placer County, and Library Director in Benicia.
In August of 2004 Governor Schwarzenegger said of Hildreth's appointment, "I am confident that Susan will continue the tradition of inspiring, educating and informing Californians through the tremendous resource of our state libraries... She shares my commitment to education and to preserving our state's rich cultural heritage, and I know she will use her tremendous experience as a librarian to enhance and strengthen California's public libraries."
Members of the Senate Rules Committee are: Senator Don Perata (Chair), Oakland; Senator Jim Battin (Vice-Chair), Palm Desert; Senator Roy Ashburn, Bakersfield; Senator Debra Bowen, Redondo Beach; and Senator Gilbert Cedillo, Los Angeles.
