Summer of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Inspired by the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (the sequel is due to be released summer 2008), Valerie Voss of Tulare County Library has come up with a metamorphosis project for California teens and their jeans.
Five pairs of jeans will travel around California libraries, ready to be customized and metamorphosized by your teens. Sign up to take part and you will get a pair of jeans for two weeks, and then one week to send them to the next library. Libraries can take pictures of the pants or programs, post them on flickr, and join in the groups and maps of traveling pants. Each set of traveling pants will come with a mix cd and list of 25 things to do in pants this summer!
The handouts have more information, including suggestions for a pant prom extravaganza, jean craft ideas, and 25 things to do this summer inspired by the pants.

Metamorphastic Programs for Teens
Ideas for creative teen programs on the theme of metamorphosis and change, from Valerie Voss of Tulare County Library. The handout includes ideas and resources for cooking, knitting, sewing, photography, and geocaching programs. [ handout ]
Craft projects for teens
Help your teens morph their space, style and bodies. Jennifer Lawson of San Diego County Library has developed lots of ideas for craft projects with step-by-step directions and cost estimates for each activity.
Help teens morph their space by hosting programs where teens can make kaleidoscope candles, altered photo frames, CD clocks, music mobiles, buried bug soap, and origami bugs. See photos!
Help teens morph their style with programs where they can customize t-shirts, or make shrinky dink jewelry, hardware jewelry, or newspaper purses. Teens could make butt pillows and purses from old pairs of jeans (perhaps to tie in with a traveling pants program). Or host a program where teens make masks and then host a masquerade ball at the library. See photos!
Help teens morph their bodies by hosting programs where they can make frozen yoghurt and other healthy snacks in the library, or hold a yoga or dance workshops. See photos!
Read for a Reason
Find out more about an altruistic summer reading program. Pat Downs’ program at the San Diego County Library had all the fun of regular summer reading programs, but when kids and teens registered and met reading targets, her community partners donated food to a local animal shelter and books to a local clinic.

- suggestions of places to take summer reading to;

- potential partners;
- suggestions for off-site summer reading kits;
