The Value of Summer Reading
Summer reading programs help children and teens retain and enhance their reading skills while on summer vacation, they attract children, teens, and families to the library, and they can strengthen the library’s role in the community.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has compiled a wealth of research on the importance of summer library programs that looks at summer learning loss, why summer library programs help close the achievement gap, what makes summer library programs so powerful, and summer safety issues related to summer library programs. The Learning Season: The Untapped Power of Summer to Advance Student Achievement
This report, issued by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation in June 2007, shows that summer enrichment opportunities have a much more profound impact than previously believed. The report reveals that children experience learning loss over the summer months, and these losses are much greater for children from low-income families than they are for other children.
