The California Summer Reading Program also provides resources for libraries presenting Family & Adult Summer Reading Programs.

Programming ideas

Gardening programs work well with this year’s buggy and metamorphosis summer reading themes. Check out the Master Gardeners for comprehensive California gardening information, including a speakers bureau, organized by county.

Bring the garden into the kitchen and host cookery-themed programs for adults. The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley maintains a great list of food and cookery resources, including a booklist, oral histories with noted California chefs and others in the food industry, and internet resources. Bring in a chef from a local restaurant to talk food and demonstrate cooking with local ingredients. Or ask local cafes, restaurants and food sellers for money-off coupons as program incentives.

Programs on the environment tie in with the outdoors nature of the Reading Bug theme. Programs could include protecting the coast, the global warming debate, pollution, solar energy, recycling and more. For information local to California, check out Environment California, the State of California’s Department of Conservation, the LA River Project if you are in the LA area, or Heal the Bay if you are in Southern California. Think about installing a wormery in the library for a feature that could involve the whole family.

Programs about change work with the Metamorphosis @ Your Library theme. Change programs might include:
