We are the oldest and largest state association for libraries, library staff and library supporters in California.

Scope

The California Library Association respects the privacy of its members. This policy guides how CLA collects, stores and uses information which is collected by CLA or provided to CLA, whether through the web site or by other methods such as applications, registrations, orders for products or services or other means. This policy covers CLA's website, www.cla-net.net. This policy does not cover non-CLA websites that are linked to the CLA website, nor does it cover CLA section web pages that are not maintained by CLA staff.

Collection of information

Data collected by CLA are used to help CLA better serve its members. It is the association's general policy to collect and store only personal information that members and visitors to the web site knowingly provide. If the CLA privacy policy changes, we will notify all members by e-mail or a special announcement placed on the CLA web site.

Users of the public area of the CLA web site browse anonymously. Only aggregate data, such as the number of hits per page, are collected. Aggregate data are only used for internal and marketing purposes and do not provide any personally identifying information. CLA uses this information to help make the site more useful to visitors, to learn about the number of visitors to the site and to determine the types of technology visitors use.

To gain access to members-only resources and personalization features on the CLA web site, members and other users are asked to register and provide some information. These data are submitted voluntarily. CLA only uses this information to enhance its products and distribution of those products to its members. This information is not sold or distributed in any manner.

Username and password

Every member of CLA is assigned a unique member number and password to access the "Members Only" section of the CLA website. CLA will transmit that information to the company which administer the website to allow members to access this site.

Use of information

If a member chooses to provide CLA with personal information through a membership, an order for a product or service, registering for continuing education programs or other means, CLA may use that information to provide or offer products or services, for billing purposes, to send information, to respond and for other purposes related to the reason members provided the information to CLA. For example, if someone is interested in becoming a member, CLA may use the information provided to process the application, maintain the membership, send information, respond and to provide services and member benefits.

If members choose to provide CLA with personal information, CLA may also release some of this personal information to various organizations. This information is limited to names, organizational affiliation, address, phone numbers, fax numbers and e-mail addresses. These organizations include, but are not limited to:

By becoming a member of CLA, the member allows CLA to release personal information to other members and entities which use the on-line Membership Directory, unless the member chooses to not be listed in the Membership Directory. Data included in the Membership Directory includes names, organizational affiliation, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and section membership.

Opting-out of the release of your personal information

An opt-out box will appear on the membership billing and renewal statement annually. If a member does not wish CLA to release information to third parties, they may indicate this on the form. Alternatively, users may contact CLA in writing at info@cla-net.org or by mail, to California Library Association, 717 20th Street, Suite 200, Sacramento, CA 95814 or by fax, to 916-447-8394.

In any case, use of on-line services involving the payment of fees such as conference registration or membership allows CLA to provide information to the third party vendor who processes these orders.This vendor ensures the security of this service.

Fax and e-mail policy

CLA may fax or e-mail materials to members and non-members who have contacted the association to receive more information about the products or services offered by CLA, provided that CLA provides in each message a notice on how to "opt-out" of similar future communications.

CLA may automatically include members on e-mails lists, such as CALIX, but will include information on how to un-subscribe in each message. Sections and Round Tables that maintain e-mail lists outside the control of the CLA staff are informed of this policy and asked to follow it.

As a convenience to users, CLA's website contain links to sites or services created and maintained by other organizations. CLA does not control, and is not responsible for, the accuracy, timeliness, security or even the continued availability or existence of this outside information. Opinions expressed on other sites are not necessarily those of CLA, nor does CLA endorse, warrant, or guarantee products or services described or offered on other sites. Neither is CLA responsible for the contents of any websites that choose to link to the web site.

Other companies linked to CLA's websites may collect information when the member views or clicks on these sites. CLA cannot control this collection of information. The member should contact these companies directly if there are any questions about their use of the information they collect.

Notification of changes

If CLA is going to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time of collection, members will be notified via e-mail. Members will have a choice as to whether or not CLA uses this information in this different manner. In addition, if CLA makes any material changes in the privacy practices that do not affect user information already stored in the database, CLA will post a prominent notice on the web site notifying users of the change. In some cases where CLA posts the notice, the association will also email users, who have opted to receive communications from the organization, notifying them of the changes in our privacy practices.
