Katherine R. (Kathy) Gould, Palos Verdes Library District

Statement of Concerns

I believe in the power of collaboration, and that strong professional associations help build stronger libraries. Ten years of active involvement with CLA has given me a perspective on its strengths and weaknesses, and I look forward to working with the CLA Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers to:

  • Increase the value of CLA membership by offering a broader range of member services and more opportunities for member engagement, networking, and professional growth.

  • Explore partnerships within and outside the library community to enhance CLA services and create a broader base of support for California libraries.

  • Build on CLA’s strong tradition of legislative advocacy and provide more effective tools for growing local, state, and federal support for libraries.

  • Diversify CLA’s sources of revenue to ensure long-term financial stability.

  • Sustain high standards of governance and transparency.

Background

Kathy has served as the Director of the Palos Verdes Library District since 2004. An independent special district, PVLD is governed by a publicly-elected Board of Library Trustees and operates three libraries and teen annex. Kathy oversees 90 employees and over 200 volunteers and is responsible for a $7.4 million annual budget. PVLD was named a Top Workplace in the greater Los Angeles area by the LA News Group in 2013.

After telling her mother at age 10 that she wanted to be a librarian when she grew up, Kathy received her BA from Brandon University (Canada) and her Master of Science in Library and Information Management from the University of Southern California. She worked as a public and special librarian before taking a career detour, during which she held a variety of management and executive roles in the private sector in Australia and the U.S. before returning to libraries in her current position.

Kathy’s husband, Don, is also a librarian and is currently a Community Library Manager for the County of Los Angeles Public Library.

Kathy served as a member of the California Library Association Legislative Committee from 2005-2009, and was Chair of that Committee in 2008/2009. She has served on several CLA task forces and is currently a member of the CLA Finance Committee. She was CLA Member of the Year in 2011.

Kathy is a four-time mentor for the Eureka Leadership Program for emerging library leaders.

Her professional and community involvement includes the Infopeople Advisory Board, the Califa Board of Directors, California Special Districts Association Legislative Committee, Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Volunteer Center of the South Bay-Harbor-Long Beach Board of Directors. She is also a member of the American Library Association, Women Leading Government, the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, the Palos Verdes Art Center, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.

Kathy has received a number of awards including the Palos Verdes Peninsula Council of PTAs Very Special Person Award, Palos Verdes Lions Club Community Recognition Award, American Association of University Women Palos Verdes Chapter Status of Women Award, California State Senate District 25 Woman of Distinction Award, California State Assembly Woman of the Year nominee, and the Freedom4U George Allen Lifetime Achievement Award.
