Maggie Clarke, UCLA Department of Information Studies

Student Representative

Candidate Statement

As a second-year student in the MLIS program at UCLA, I am aware that today’s library students are being presented with a myriad of exciting ideas, new technologies, and potential paths in professional practice. However the student experience also comes with a unique set of pressures surrounding professional development, navigating the job market, and making decisions about how translate what we are learning into careers as effective and innovative members of the library community. I feel that to address these pressures it is essential that students not only be active learners but feel empowered to be contributors to the field even while in school.

I am pursuing this position as an opportunity to learn from leaders in librarianship, participate in the exciting work being tackled by CLA as an organization and member librarians in the field, and serve the students whose knowledge, support, and unique perspectives make library school the rich educational opportunity that it is. I am a perpetual advocate for the power of education, I would love the opportunity to represent the questions, concerns, and unique perspectives of California's library students to this important organization and in doing so improve the experiences of my fellow students and contribute to the essential work being done by CLA.

Biography

Though my first year of the MLIS program at UCLA has taught me an incredible amount about libraries, the amazingly varied work librarians and information professionals do, and the importance of professional organizations like CLA to the field as well as exposed me to myriad unique perspectives on the roles played by information spaces today, my librarianship continues to be informed by my background in education, customer service, and service to the community. I have participated as a student representative to the selection committee for the programs being offered at this year’s CLA conference, am the incoming treasurer to UCLA’s student ALA chapter, and in addition to working as an assistant in UCLA’s Media Information & Technology Lab, I recently completed an internship at the Los Angeles County Library’s West Hollywood branch. My professional interests include information literacy instruction, community advocacy, open access, intellectual property rights, and development.
