Pasadena Public Library director, Jan Sanders, has been named a 2014 Woman of the Year by Senator Carol Liu!  Senator Carol Liu honored five “Women of the Year” for their outstanding accomplishments in the 25th California SenateDistrict on Friday, March 28, 2014. Each year State Senators honor women in their districts who have made unique and often unsung contributions to enhance the quality of life for others.  Senator Liu stated, “Many times individuals who make the biggest difference in society go unnoticed. Honoring these ‘Women of the Year’ provides an opportunity to thank those who have selflessly worked towards a greater good.”

Luis Herrera, San Francisco Public Library’s city librarian has been awarded the 2014 Peggy Sullivan Award for Public Library Administrators Supporting Services.  The Sullivan Award is presented annually to an individual in a library administrator role who has shown exceptional understanding and support of public library service to children. The award will be presented at the ALA President’s Program, Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

Cen Campbell was named a 2014 Library Journal Mover and Shaker!  “Cen founded in November 2011 to document her experiments using apps and ebooks in toddler and preschool story times in libraries and children’s museums in Silicon Valley. Soon, other children’s librarians, reviewers, developers, library administrators, and teachers from all over the United States and Canada began to reach out to to request training workshops and to share their own experiences on the blog in an effort to establish a community of practice around an issue for which there were limited professional resources and more than a little professional ambivalence.”2

David Gray, Palm Springs Public Library Board of Trustees, was the recipient of the 2014 Community Service Leadership Award from the Desert Business Association. He received this honor at the Annual Awards & Installation of the DBA on Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs.

Sacramento Public Library has received a Library Services & Technology Act Grant to establish a Veterans Resource Station dedicated to helping veterans and their families. Located at the Southgate branch, the station provides assistance through trained volunteers who connect veterans and their families to benefits and resources while also providing access to books, DVDs and pamphlets on various topics including transitioning from military to civilian life, finding jobs, surviving change, veteran’s benefits and managing post-traumatic stress disorders.

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District librarian Rachel Wright was awarded a Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation grant to establish a Digital Library for their learning community.   The funds purchased popular fiction and common core non-fiction ebooks and eReaders for check out, providing all secondary students, staff and parents 24/7 access to a district-wide shared collection of literacy materials.

Laurel Narizny was hired by Caltech in March as a Metadata Librarian.

The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) is pleased to announce the selection of two new Community Librarians at the Saratoga Library and the Los Altos Library/Woodland Branch:
Allison Parham was selected as the Community Librarian at the Saratoga Library in February 2014 after serving as that library’s Acting Community Librarian since October 2013.  
Judith Gregg has been appointed as the new Los Altos Community Librarian after previously serving as the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in downtown San Jose, as Manager of Reference and Resource Services.
