Defying Gravity: 2012 Conference Report
With over 800 attendees and over 90 exhibitors, CLA’s 2012 conference was a success! With the theme of Defying Gravity: Libraries Without Limits, featured speakers and presenters met the challenge.
CLA Keynote Speaker Brewster Kahle got attendees started on a note of high energy on Saturday. As a passionate advocate for public internet access, Kahle has worked tirelessly to advance the idea that information and literature (in whatever form) is worth saving and making available for future generations.
Programs and poster session topics ran the gamut from mobile apps to green library buildings to digital repositories. Over 65 sessions were available for attendees, leading to the problem of trying to decide which one program to attend during any given time period! Over 35 poster sessions held in the Exhibits Hall gave presenters another venue for highlighting projects and programs.
But it was not all work and no play! The Awards Reception on Friday evening gave us a chance to honor our colleagues. The inaugural group of outstanding California librarians was inducted in the California Library Hall of Fame. (For a complete listing of inductees go to http://www.cla-net.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=612) And on Saturday evening, a standing-room only crowd watched as brave souls went up against an evil deck of slides in the competition known as Battledecks!
CLA’s Annual Conference is a chance for the California library community to come together, socialize, learn and have fun!
