Barnaby Hughes for CLA Board, Student Representative

Statement of Concerns

I would relish the opportunity to serve as Student Representative to the CLA Board. Having now attended four different universities and taken multiple MOOCs, I have plenty of student experience to offer. I am also quite proud to have recently received a travel grant to attend the conference of the Society for Scholarly Publishing in San Francisco where I was not shy about engaging publishers, policymakers and librarians in discussions beneficial to our profession. I am a passionate advocate for open access, library publishing and information literacy and I am excited about the future of libraries and librarianship! As student representative, I promise to offer our California Library Association all the effort and enthusiasm necessary to make us a premiere organization.

Barnaby Hughes' Background

My name is Barnaby Hughes, and I was born to be a librarian. The son of a school librarian, I first worked as a student TA in my high school library and then as a copy cataloguer and ILL assistant while an undergraduate at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I completed three degrees in history, theology and medieval studies and am currently pursuing a MLIS at San Jose State University. I am currently the Managing Editor of the SLIS Student Research Journal, a postgraduate, peer-reviewed publication of SJSU. In my spare time, I write about theatre, opera, wine and books for various online and print media.
