Misty Jones for CLA Board Director

Statement of Concerns

I believe libraries are the great equalizer, always inclusive and never exclusive. I thrive on change and believe that the strength of libraries is in our ability to redefine ourselves to fit public need. As a library advocate, I want to make sure we are effectively telling our story to as many people as possible. We are responsible for our own future.

Misty Jones' Background

Misty is the Deputy Director for the San Diego Public Library Central Division. She has spent the last year working on the new Central library project, and is looking forward to opening a state of the art library in September 2013.

A graduate of the MLIS program from University of South Carolina, Misty started her career at the Greenville County Library in 2000. In 2003 she went to work for Charleston County Library where she stayed for nine years, holding a variety of positions ranging from Business Librarian to Central Library Manager. She developed highly successful business and nonprofit resource programs and made the Charleston County Library the go to place for grant writers, nonprofit agencies and entrepreneurs.

Misty became interested in library advocacy after attending a Frontline Advocacy workshop at ALA. She completed the Turning the Page program and committed herself to library advocacy. While at Charleston County Library she founded and chaired Libraries Out Loud, an advocacy committee focused on training all staff in basic advocacy so that they are empowered and prepared to convey the value of the library to everyone. She knows that this is more important now than ever. As part of Libraries Out Loud, Misty promoted libraries to legislators and other elected officials throughout the state. She feels privileged to now be a member of the CLA Legislative Committee.
