Welcome to our Member Spotlight! Our goal is to spotlight CLA members who are making a difference in our profession and especially in California.
We are pleased to start this new feature by shining the spotlight on Michelle Perera. If you know Michelle, you already know that she is a bundle of never-ending energy. She is currently the Assistant Director for the Rancho Cucamonga Library. The library was the recipient of the 2013 National Medal for Museums and Libraries. She is also a California Library Association board member and a member of the Infopeople Advisory Board.
Michelle was part of the team that opened the Rancho Cucamonga Library in 1994 and in the last 19 years has been a part of some exciting and innovative projects, including the opening of the Victoria Gardens Library (where she got to manage a $2 million opening day collection and hire her entire staff), co-managing the remodel of the Archibald Library, and co-producing a biannual telethon fundraiser. She also spearheads the grant writing team for the library and has been successful in that area. Michelle was instrumental in developing the concept for the Play and Learn Islands™ and creating the Staff Innovation Fund™.
Michelle has a B.A. in English Literature, an MLIS, has taught for SJSU MLIS program for 7 years, and was recently named a 2013 Mover and Shaker. And, on a personal note, Michelle loves to travel (favorite destinations are Venice, Bora Bora, and Easter Island), play poker (once played in a World Series of Poker game), watch reality TV, dote on her cats Leo and Smokey Bear (no, she isn’t a crazy cat lady), and is on a mission to find the best salted caramel!
