Jan Sanders was privileged to be a coach at the PLA Leadership Institute, held in conjunction with ICMA, March 4-8 in Chicago.  Funded in part by IMLS, the institute accepted 24 leaders from a field of 180+.  Two Californians, Hillary Theyer of Torrance and Sylvia Richardson of Palos Verdes, were among the group of learners.  Coaches came from all over the US, from Washington to Florida.  We are proud to have strong representatives from California!

Dr. Lesley Farmer, CSULB Librarianship Program Coordinator, has been chosen to serve on the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Advisory Board. This new set of awards has been made available due to the generous donation of David M. Rubenstein.

Jana De Brauwere is proud to announce that she has successfully graduated from Contra Costa County Master Gardeners program. Master Gardeners is an educational organization operating as an agricultural extension under UC Davis. The Master Gardeners produce high quality programs on a variety of gardening topics and the programs are free to libraries.

Congratulations to Michelle Perera, Assistant Library Director at the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library and Christy Aguirre, Branch Supervisor at the Southgate Branch of the Sacramento Public Library for being named 2013 Library Journal “Movers and Shakers”!  Library Journal defines a Mover and Shaker as those in our profession “who are doing extraordinary work to serve their users and to move libraries of all types and library services forward.” 

Cindy Mediavilla's chapter, "Conducting a Yearlong Fellowship Program: Lessons Learned From 'Transforming Life After 50,'" about the State Library's successful TLA50 program, has been published in Continuing Education for Librarians: Essays on Career Improvement Through Classes, Workshops and More edited by Carol Smallwood, et al. (McFarland, 2013).

CLA congratulates all the libraries who will be hosting Book to Action programs this spring and summer, in particular our member libraries, Dixon Public Library, Glen Avon Regional Library in Riverside County, Hercules Library in Contra Costa County, Long Beach Public Library, Ovitt Family Community Library in Ontario, Reedley Branch Library in Fresno County, Sacramento Public Library, and Santa Monica Public.  Visit the library websites for news of events, author visits and volunteer opportunities.
