Interest Group Spotlight

Technology Interest Group

The Technology Interest Group (TIG), previously known as the Information Technology Interest Group, is excited to start 2013 with a bigger, more encompassing name that better represents the scope of the group.

2012 was an exciting year for us as we sponsored our first ever Spring Fling and conference programs and we began publishing the newsletter SYNC.

In spring 2012, in partnership with the Technical Services Interest Group, we presented a webinar titled “Web of Languages: An Introduction to Usability and Developing Web Applications with AJAX and jQuery.”  Speakers included Sarah Houghton, Library Director of San Rafael Public Library, who presented on general concepts of usability; Derek Christensen, Web Technologist at San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science, who defined AJAX; and Cary Gordon of the Cherry Hill Company who discussed the uses of jQuery in web development.

In the fall, we sponsored the CLA conference program “From Mess to Success: Tips on Redesigning Websites.” Presented by Amanda Jacobs Foust, Julie Magnus, and Sarah Butts of the Marin County Free Library, the seminar detailed the challenges and successes experienced during a public and staff website relaunch for those considering similar projects.

2012 also saw the first two issues of SYNC, a newsletter addressing current and future technology trends in libraries. SYNC is available from the Technology Interest Group pages of CLA’s website. We have already published a number of interesting pieces on near field communication, content management systems for websites, questions to ask eBook publishers, planning social networking events using the cloud, and recently a case study of a merged educational program. Please consider submitting an article about use of technologies in your library. You can email submissions to

Furthermore, we initiated a Facebook group to facilitate discussions of technology topics in libraries. You can join our Facebook group here:
