The Youth Services Interest Group (YSIG) has been very busy this year! From executing Spring Fling, to highlighting successful California youth programming through quarterly issues of Briefings Newsletter, the YSIG team has been making it happen in 2012!

This year also ushered in a new YSIG Leadership Team. Each new leadership member has brought enthusiasm and fresh ideas to help make the YSIG successful. Here’s a little information about the new team:

Julie Zeoli, Chair, is a teen services librarian at the Yorba Linda Public Library, and has served for several years on the YSIG. Julie also sits on the Begun Scholarship Committee and was a 2010 Eureka! Fellow.

Rachelle Lopez, Vice Chair, is a children’s librarian for Ontario City Library. She sits on the John and Patricia Beatty Award Committee and the CSLP Early Childhood Manual committee, and is chair of the Children’s Inland Library System Committee.

Edwin Rodarte, Program Coordinator, is a young adult library assistant for the Ontario City Library and a librarian for Los Angeles Public Library. A 2010 graduate from San José State University, he is interested in graphic novels and manga collection development, teen programming, and teen advocacy.

Anna Hartman, Program Coordinator, is Children’s Librarian at La Mesa Library in San Diego County. She was a 2010 Eureka! Fellow and is a member of CLA’s California Summer Reading Program Advisory Council.

Celeste Steward, Briefings Editor, is the Children’s Collection Development Librarian at Alameda County Library. She is a former children’s librarian and a member of the 2010 John and Patricia Beatty Award Committee.

In May 2012, the YSIG presented a fun and informative Spring Fling event, Who’s Afraid of Comic Books? Building and Maintaining Graphic Novel Collections at Your Library. The three-hour workshop was led by comic book enthusiasts (and superstar librarians), Amanda Jacobs Foust, Marin County Free Library, and Jack Baur, Berkeley Public Library. Amanda and Jack provided attendees with important information on the art of making and reading comics, how to select, organize, and preserve comic book collections, and why readers love comics. The workshop also provided attendees with the opportunity to hear from a panel of top comic books authors: Steven Seagle, Hope Larson, Stan Sakai, and Ed Brubaker!

The YSIG continues to publish its quarterly newsletter, Briefings, edited by Celeste Steward. Each issue contains information on youth programs and services, as well as important updates for librarians and library support staff. This year marks the much anticipated return of Penny Peck’s regular column, Meet the Author! Briefings is a great way to show librarians throughout California the amazing work going on at your library! To contribute to the next issue, be sure to watch for Celeste’s Call for Submissions via CALIX or the YSIG listserv. To join the YSIG listserv, please visit the YSIG website.

So what’s next for the YSIG? Well, we invite all of you to join us at CLA Annual Conference in San José, November 2–4. The YSIG will be presenting the program, Programming for the Male Customer: Tweens to 20-Somethings. The event will be held on Sunday, November 4, from 2:45–4:15pm. If you are interested in learning more about the YSIG, we also invite you to attend our annual meeting—check out the conference program for the time and location.

We hope to see you all in San José!
