Susan Patron’s newest novel, Behind the Masks (Scholastic, 2012), exposes gritty life in the booming gold rush town of Bodie, California, through the journal of a fourteen-year-old girl … Donna Leaf contributed the 25,000th signature to the recent White House petition for an endorsement of school libraries.  She was invited to contribute a short article to Library Media Connection on what the experience meant to her … Alameda County Library employees realize that hunger doesn’t stop after the holidays and they have initiated a year-round food donation program at six branch libraries in partnership with the Alameda County Community Food Bank … Ken Haycock has been appointed research professor of management and organization at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, where he will direct new online graduate programs in Library and Information Management … Pat Toney is now a part-time children’s librarian at San Francisco Public Library. She has also received an ALA Member First-Time Attendee and REFORMA scholarship to attend JCLC in September 2012 … Joanna Axelrod has been awarded a scholarship to attend the 2012 Eureka! Pasadena and its sister library, Glendale, are the first public libraries in the state of California to offer the 3M Cloud Library … Jennifer Sweeney’s new book, Literacy: A Way Out For At-Risk Youth (Libraries Unlimited, 2011), explores juvenile corrections librarianship … Cindy Mediavilla and Natalie Cole presented a poster session at the ALA conference in June on the effectiveness of the Public Library Association’s “Every Child Ready to Read” (ECRR2) program, conducted at the Los Angeles Public Library.
