Interest Group Spotlight
CLA’s Technical Services Interest Group
|Technical Services 2011 award-winner Stephanie Roach
You’ve probably seen the initials TSIG on various CLA flyers and in CLA emails through the years. TSIG stands for the Technical Services Interest Group, a group designed to keep the California library community informed about all things technical services. We serve as a vehicle for action when addressing the operation and management of the full range of technical services activities such as acquiring, organizing, disseminating, and preserving library collections. Each year, the group strives to put on training events during the Spring Fling and at the annual conference. Our 2010 CLA conference program, “Digging into our ‘Hidden Collections’: Maximizing Staff Skills and Technology to Enhance Access to Special Collections,” was featured in the ALCTS Affiliates Showcase at the ALA 2012 Annual Conference! The group also meets at conference to discuss pressing issues and encourage new membership.
In the past few years, RDA (Resource Description and Access) has been the dominant topic for TSIG. RDA is the successor to AACR2—the infamous cataloging rules—and it is set for final approval in March 2013. TSIG has been offering workshops for several years to prepare the cataloging community for these changes. Luiz Mendes of CSU Northridge, who serves on the ALCTS RDA Planning and Training Task Force, and Chamya Kincy of UCLA, who serves on the ALCTS RDA Conference Forums and Programs Task Force, have graciously spoken at these workshops and will continue at the 2012 conference with both an in-depth pre-conference and a regular session. We expect to present many RDA sessions for several years to come as demand rises in the cataloging community.
Over the years, TSIG has seen its share of excellent board members who continue to do work for the group. Here is a list of current board members: Mary Cohen, Chair, from Palos Verdes Library District; Loretta Staal, Vice Chair, from Carlsbad City Library; Stephanie Roach, Spring Fling Coordinator, from John F. Kennedy University; Sandy Schmitz, Past Chair, from Ventura County Library; advisory members Sarah Buchanan, Doctoral Student in Information Studies, University of Texas at Austin; Yu-Lan Chou from Innovative Interfaces; Elaine Franco from UC Davis (Elaine is also the ALCTS representative for TSIG); Bie-Hwa Ma from UC San Diego; and Julie Moore from CSU Fresno. We also welcome Eric Forte as our OCLC liaison.
Each year, the group presents two awards: the New Leader Award, which is sponsored by Brodart, and the Award of Achievement. Julie Moore was the last candidate to receive the Award of Achievement in 2010; it was not given in 2011 and will not be given again in 2012. We have been short on nominations and are always looking for more. Recent winners of the New Leader Award include Sarah Buchanan in 2009, Diane Maelstrom in 2010, and Stephanie Roach in 2011. We look forward to announcing our 2012 recipient very soon!
