It's Academic! Current Trends, Recruitment, and Opportunities in Academic Libraries
It's Academic! was presented via WebEx by CLA's Academic Interest Group and Student Interest Group, April 24, 2012. Experienced academic library department heads and hiring agents from University of California and California State University libraries shared their views of job opportunities in academic libraries; made suggestions concerning the characteristics and qualities of successful professional hires; and pointed to trends in types of library jobs and future growth. A recent MLIS graduate and successful job search participant shared her experiences and advice on how to handle job interviews and related matters.

Sandra Vella (Head, Library Instruction Services Department, Shields Library, UC Davis and chair of the Academic Interest Group) and Young Lee (Reference & Electronic Resources Librarian, University of La Verne Law Library and chair of the Student Interest Group) moderated the program.
Myra Appel is responsible for overseeing reference, outreach, instruction and collection development in the humanities and social sciences at UC Davis Library. She also serves as the bibliographer for Latin American Studies, Spanish & Portuguese Literature and Languages and interim bibliographer for East Asian Studies. She served as chair of the ALA Ethnic Materials Information Exchange Round Table.
Linda Goff has been Head of Instructional Services at CSU Sacramento since 1986. She is currently the President of ALA’s Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT.) From 2005-2009 she represented ALA on the Information Literacy Standing Committee within IFLA, the International Federation of Library Associations.
Xiaoli Li is an experienced cataloger and head of cataloging who participates on University of California system wide committees, including serving as chair of the UC Cataloging and Metadata Common Interest Group and as convener of a Lightening Team of UC Next Gen Technical Services Initiatives. She is also an InfoPeople teacher in the area of technical services.
Cynthia Mari Orozco is a new librarian hire who has recently gone through the process of reviewing job listings, writing resumes and cover letters and interviewing at various institutions. She will provide tips on what she has learned during this process.
