The Summer Matters Initiative
The summer months bring unique opportunities for learning outside the traditional school year and walls. High quality summer learning programs change students' lives for the better each and every summer, improving students' academic achievement and readiness to learn. Every year a child does not participate in a summer learning program puts them at risk for summer learning loss, weight gain, and unhealthy eating. Moreover, children who attend summer programs enter school half a grade ahead of their peers who do not.
Summer Matters is the first ever statewide campaign focused on creating and expanding access to high-quality learning opportunities for all California students. A diverse statewide coalition of educators, policymaker, advocates, school district leaders, mayors, parents, and others are working collaboratively to promote summer learning in California. And across California, schools, after-school providers, libraries, parks, and other groups are coming together, to provide unique programs, experiences, and resources to broaden the horizons of California's youth, strengthen their connections to their community's resources, and fill the empty weeks of summer with enrichment and academic activities that form a bridge from one school year to the next.
Public library summer reading programs help children and teens retain and improve their reading skills over the summer, they encourage kids to set and meet reading goals, and they provide them with enrichment programs that extend the reading experience. The California Library Association and California's libraries are working with the Summer Matters campaign to engage underserved children and teens with library programs and resources and help ensure they return to school ready to learn in the fall.
Cooperation between community institutions strengthens all parties by leveraging and maximizing all of a community's resources to the benefit of its children and youth. Summer Matters is bringing together the best elements of what schools, communities and families have to offer to keep kids safe, engaged and learning when school is out.
