Edna Yelland Scholarship Winners

October 2004

CLA annually awards three scholarships to California students in library and information science programs through The CLA Scholarship For Minority Students In Memory Of Edna Yelland. These scholarships supports ethnic minority students in the attainment of a graduate degree in library or information science. Candidates must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a master's program in an ALA accredited California library school to be eligible.

Meet this year's scholarship winners.

Diane de Lara is a first-year MLIS student at San Jose State University. Her parents emigrated from the Philippines to California before she was born. She will be the first in her family to receive a master's degree. In addition to her studies, Diane works part-time for the Contra Costa County Library and a small patient library at Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo.

Before discovering librarianship, Diane worked for ten years in community-based non-profits, including the Union of Pan Asian Communities, Women's Economic Agenda Project, and Breast Cancer Action. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1994 with a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies. Diane looks forward to working in libraries as another way to help build stronger, healthier communities.

Janine Sanches Rodrigues is a second year student at University of California, Los Angeles working towards a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science. She is originally from Porto Alegre, a small city in the south of Brazil. Janine decided to become a librarian when she was a teenager. She has a bachelor's degree in library studies from a federal university in Brazil and has worked in a variety of different types of libraries and information centers. She moved to the United States in June 2001. Her interests in the profession include information literacy, international issues, and multicultural communities.

Shu-Hua Liu, a library school student at San Jose State University, brings a passion for librarianship rooted in her childhood in China. In 1983, she graduated from Taipei Municipal Teacher's College with an academic excellence award in elementary education. She earned a B.A. degree in English Instruction with honor at National Taiwan Normal University, and taught for more than a decade in the United States and Taiwan. When she arrived in the United States in 1988 as an international student, a friendly public librarian helped her adjust by providing all sorts of information.

Her goal of being a librarian is in reaching people who do not know the diverse functions and resources of a library. Her vision is to see the library truly become a gateway to knowledge and a treasury of information in a community where users with diverse cultures and backgrounds will enjoy going.

Congratulations to all our winners! These students will be recognized at the CLA Annual Membership Meeting on Sunday morning, November 14, 2004 during the conference.
