October 2004
California culture has engendered and nurtured a creative environment for emerging literary talents since the early days of statehood. This month, libraries and bookstores will honor the California author.
Some background information: On September 4, 2003, California Writers Week was proclaimed by the California State Legislature. The California Library Association joined with the 14 branches of the California Writers Club, and the staff of Honorable Tim Leslie, 4th Assembly District to draft and cosponsor the Proclamation. The legislation's purpose is to "...encourage the people of California to reflect upon the contributions that California writers have made to humankind."
A variety of activities for the third week of October are being planned by the California Writers Club, several California Libraries, and major book stores. For example, the Inland Empire CWC Branch will hold a book festival; Orange County CWC plans the first-ever Writers & Readers Fest; San Fernando CWC will present readings of California authors in the Porter Ranch Library and the Canoga Park Borders bookstore.
The San Fernando Branch will also supply posters to the Central Library and Regional Libraries. Barnes and Noble in Thousand Oaks and Encino and the Canoga Park Borders Bookstore have agreed to use the posters in displays that spotlight books by California authors.
More information about California Writers Week and the California Writers Club may be found at www.calwriters.org. The individual websites of the 14 branches are also available at this website.
