Read Across America to be celebrated on March 3

The California Library Association is partnering with the California Teachers Association to promote Read Across America. Now in its sixth year, Read Across America, sponsored nationally by the NEA, is a day celebrating reading. Its goal is to motivate children to read and to generate new enthusiasm for reading. The theme for 2003 is Read...It's a Trip!

In California, Read Across America will be observed on Monday, March 3 in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday. Actor Dule Hill, from NBC's The West Wing, is this year's Honorary Chairperson in California. He will lead a special reading event with Los Angeles area public school children on March 3.

The winning books for the 2001 and 2002 California Young Reader Medal Program (CYRM), jointly sponsored by the California Association of Teachers of English, California Reading Association, the California School Library Association and CLA, are being suggested as recommended reading for the 2003 California Read Across America event. Public and school libraries are urged to participate in Read Across America by planning special events in their communities on March 3 to stress the importance of learning to read.
