Miles Wins 2005 Election

Margaret Miles, County Librarian for Plumas County, was elected to the Vice President/President Elect position in the recently concluded California Library Association election. Margaret will take office in November, at the conclusion of the conference. She has served in a number of leadership roles in CLA, including on the Assembly and Executive Committee from 2000-2003, as Membership Chair in 1998 & 1999 and as President, Children's & Young Adult Services Section in 1995. She has also served on the Finance Committee and the California Young Reader Medal Committee.
For the past several years, voter participation has been decreasing. This year, however, with the help of "get out the vote" support from section leadership, voter turnout actually increased from 40% to 43% in the general election, while most sections had large double-digit jumps in participation. The biggest increase came from the Information Technology Section, which improved by 16% over last year. The section with the greatest overall participation was the Management Section, which had an impressive 57% voter turnout.

This year, CLA offered online voting for the first time. To accommodate members without internet access, the CLA office sent paper ballots to those without an e-mail address on record. All others were offered the option of voting by mail. Out of 1528 members with online access, only 19 requested a paper ballot. CLA's first online election generally went smoothly and received overwhelmingly positive responses from our members. The simple ballot was designed by RSmart, the same vendor that designed the online CLA Member Directory. As with the directory, we are grateful to RSmart for hosting the ballot on their website free of charge.
