Dolly Goyal has worked in public libraries since age 15, and received her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Northeastern University. Her first position in California libraries included working as a Page for Santa Clara City Library and eventually an as-needed librarian the Services Department. Upon graduation from San Jose State University with a Master of Library and Information Science, she started working in youth services and adult services in the Santa Clara County Library District. She obtained a position as the Teen Services Librarian at San Mateo County Libraries and later became a Branch Manager for the East Palo Alto Library. Dolly was the Director for the Los Gatos Library in 2016-2017 and is currently the Library Services Manager for Youth and Families at San Mateo County Libraries. 

 

Dolly is a 2012 Eureka! Institute Fellow and 2014 American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leader with a sponsorship from YALSA. She was nominated to serve on the 2015 Printz Committee and later the 2016 YALSA President’s Program Task Force. Dolly is a member of REFORMA, Library Leadership & Management Association (LLAMA) and locally, the Bay Area Young Adult Librarians (BAYA). In 2016, through BAYA, Dolly was part of the CLA Young Adult Services Award committee. A firm believer in sharing resources, Dolly has co-presented at CLA, ALA and PLA on topics such as teen services programming, leading your career, management and the Outside the Lines library initiative. She was also a part of a panel for librarians and educators at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con International. Dolly lives in Sunnyvale with her husband and canine rescue, Lois Lane.


 

Helen McAlary (Past-President)

Helen McAlary has been the Library Director for Ontario City Library since 2010.  She is a Eureka Fellow and Mentor and has served California Library Association on the Member of the Year Committee, Management Interest Group, and Summer Reading Advisory Council.  Helen is chair of the Inland Library System Administrative Council and has been involved in many other roles with Inland.  She helps plan and implement the Serving with a Purpose Conference now in its 4th year, held annually in Ontario. Helen volunteers with her local Neighborhood Council as a board member and chair of the Homeless subcommittee.  She and her husband live in Los Angeles with their two dogs Rob & Olive.

Michelle is the Pasadena Public Library Director, and formerly the Rancho Cucamonga Library Director.  She has 25 years of experience in public libraries, a history of volunteering and service to the CLA, a commitment to fiscal responsibility, grant writing and fund development experience, commitment to developing staff, and 7 years of teaching for the SJSU SLIS program.  She has served in various capacities for CLA, from program chair to events chair to conference chair to sponsorship chair to CLA Board Member.  She is also very interested in fund development and in the last 15 years, she has written our team member for grants totaling almost $10 million.  She has been fortunate to be given the Excellence as a Public Librarian Award, Library Journal Mover & Shaker, and in 2013 was part of the team that received the National Medal for Libraries.  And, last but not least, she loves creating professional development opportunities for my staff and colleagues, and in that capacity, has taught for the SJSU SLIS program and created the Staff Innovation Fund training program (that, through the California State Library, reached 25 libraries systems, 400 staff, and granted out over $500,000 to those jurisdictions). 

 

And, on a personal note, Michelle loves to travel, play board games, watch terrible reality TV, go to shows, feed all the neighborhood cats, and dote on her 7-year old tabby – Cleo Kitty.


 

Derek Wolfgram (Treasurer)

Derek Wolfgram is the Director of the Redwood City Public Library, where he gets to spend every day collaborating with tremendous partners from local government, the business community, the nonprofit sector, and local school districts. He also focuses his energy on the Library’s work to support equity, diversity, and inclusion for all people in our community, as well as creating experiences to help people share the joys of literacy and learning. Previously, he served as Deputy County Librarian at Santa Clara County Library District; County Librarian of Butte County Library; and he held five different positions during 10 years with Denver Public Library in Colorado.

 

Derek received the California Library Association (CLA) Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy award in 2009, and was elected as CLA Vice President/President/Past President for 2011-2014. He has served on the Finance, Leadership Development, Legislation and Advocacy, and Intellectual Freedom Committees of CLA, and he chaired the 2016 Annual Conference in Sacramento. Derek has a passion for promoting professional development, particularly leadership development, and he was a mentor for three years of the Eureka Leadership Institute (2009, 2010, 2014) as well as for the 2016 California Library Leadership Institute. He also served as a member of the Infopeople Advisory Board.

 

Derek lives in Redwood City with his wife Robin and their dog Izzy, a Rat Terrier/Whippet/Carolina Dog/Border Collie mix who was rescued from Caborca, Sonora, Mexico.

I am not one of those people who grew up knowing she wanted to be a librarian. Although I did grow up visiting my community library and reading voraciously, I actually became a librarian because I was flunking a college ballet class. Now there’s obviously more to that story, but my point is that I found the balance, strength, flexibility, and, even grace, I lacked in a tutu in the library world and for that I will forever be grateful to three people: my mother who tucked the library employment application into the stack of ballet books she picked up for me, the assistant branch manager who took a chance on a pink-haired, going-nowhere college kid who brought her boyfriend to a page interview, and the dance master who, while in all other things was an arrogant jerk, allowed me to write a paper to save my undergraduate GPA.  

 

Since my accidental introduction to the profession I have had incredible opportunities to work in many types of libraries with many amazing people. I have worked in large, urban libraries and small, rural ones, in youth services and adult, in public service and technical, on the frontlines and as an administrator. Three of the most amazing people I have met due to my career are my husband, Anthony Halstead (A classic love story: he was in reference; I was in children’s), and our two beautiful sons Nicolas and Ryan.

 

I am extremely proud of all the things I have accomplished in libraries but here are a few of my favorite highlights: helping the St. Helena Public Library achieve the honor of being the first California library to be named a finalist for Best Small Library in America in 2014, winning the Best-in-Show PRExcellence Award for our Harry Potter Cover-to-Cover Readathon program in 2011, and propelling Elsie the Library Cat from shelter rescue to internet stardom.

 

I am a team-focused, people-person. In all of the work I have done, win or lose, my favorite part has always been the day-to-day interactions with talented individuals who make what we do fun, exciting, and fulfilling. I believe the key to success for California libraries is in people: people in the stacks whether they be shelving or browsing; people in our communities who have library cards, shop on Amazon, or don’t read at all. There truly is something here for everyone—even uncoordinated, 19-year-old, wannabe ballerinas.

Jayanti has been the Library Director and County Librarian at Monterey County Free Libraries since 2007. She has a Masters in English from Jadavpur University in India, and a Masters in Library Science from San Jose State University.  Her first job out of Library School was at the pioneering online information company Dialog which laid the foundation for her love for online information and communication. Since then, she has worked at Monterey and Salinas Public Libraries, at Hartnell College and Gavilan College, and as a volunteer librarian at her children’s Montessori school. She is passionate about getting basic library services to all California residents and consider herself a dedicated champion of the underdog. Jayanti is a strong idealist who believes that libraries broaden minds in a way that few other institutions can.


 

Erin Berman

Erin Berman is the Innovations Manager for the San José Public Library. She was an American Library Association’s (ALA) Emerging Leader in the class of 2014 and named one of Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers in 2016. She's held several positions within ALA, including Fund Raising Chair for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Round Table. Her work in the library field has mainly focused on STEAM education and bridging the technology divide. Projects include Pop-Up Mobile Makerspace, which invited new ways of thinking about public urban space design, the Virtual Privacy Lab, empowering people to take control of their online identities, and the Maker[Space]Ship, a state-of-the-art mobile lab.

 


 

Andrew Carlos

Andrew Carlos is one of the STEM and Web Services Librarians at California State University, East Bay in Hayward, CA. His research interests including emerging technology, makerspaces, user interface design, mobile technology, popular and viral culture, and information literacy instruction. He is currently working on a research project related to Korean pop culture and its spread through online sources.  He has previously worked as a school librarian in a private high school, as a public librarian in a large, multi-site system, and within a law school library as a serials assistant. His motto at work (inspired by his colleague) is “We Bring The Fun!”

Vanessa Chrisman is a Regional Administrator for the County of Los Angeles Public Library System. Her region includes fourteen libraries and two bookmobiles. Prior to working for Los Angeles County, she was the Assistant Director of the San Rafael Public Library, and the Director of the Dixon Public Library District. She has also worked in public law libraries and got her start working in an elementary school library.   


 

Heather Cousin

Heather Cousin is the Library Services Director for the Thousand Oaks Library.  She has over 15 years’ experience working in public libraries, having done every job from Page to Director. From her earliest days in Children’s and Youth Services, Cousin has made connecting the library with the community her primary focus.  She has forged partnerships with school districts, recreation and parks districts, historical societies, arts organizations and the business communities in which she’s served. Those partnerships, in turn, brought a wealth of new and diverse opportunities for the library and the communities they served.  As a result of these partnerships, Cousin and her staff established a local history archive, a monthly concert series featuring local talent and provided programming for children and families staying in domestic violence shelters.  


 

Erica Cuyugan

Erica is the Assistant City Librarian for the Santa Monica Public Library. She received her Masters in Library Science from UCLA, where she also worked as a graduate assistant for the California Center for the book and on the reference desk at the Biomedical Library. She has been working in libraries for over 12 years, a majority of which was dedicated to Teen Services at both Benicia Public Library and Santa Monica Public Library. In addition to working with teens, Erica has worked at SMPL as a branch manager and briefly, as the Interim City Librarian. She was a Eureka! Institute Fellow in 2011 and continues to keep in touch with her cohort. She has served on several committees in the past, including ALA/YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, YALSA Programming and Local Arrangement committees, CLA Member of the Year and Program Planning committees, and SCLC YA Workshop committee.

 

In her spare time, Erica enjoys being with her family, training for half/full marathons, and going to concerts.


 

Margaret Hatanaka

Margaret’s dedication to public librarianship has spanned over 30 years. Beginning with her first job as a high school reference clerk to her current position as the Adult Services Supervisor at the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library, Margaret’s passion for librarianship hasn’t wavered. After receiving her MLIS from San Jose State University, she worked as the adult services librarian for the cities of Monterey Park and Monrovia. She challenged herself and broadened her experience by becoming the children’s librarian for the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library. During her 8-year career as the children’s librarian, she helped shift the library’s culture to emphasize the importance of early learning and play in the public library. Margaret was a key member of several innovative LSTA grant funded projects which have made statewide impact, such as the Play and Learn Islands™ and Staff Innovation Fund. She is a longtime supporter of the California Library Association and served as the Public Relations and Marketing Interest Group Leader and Chairperson for the PR Excellence Committee. Margaret is a Eureka Leadership Fellow and a member of the CLA, ALA, PLA and APALA.

 

In Margaret’s spare time she enjoys playing board games with friends, finding ways to amuse her two cats, watching bad reality TV with her husband, planning trips to Cambria and Las Vegas and tending her small butterfly garden.


 

Genesis Hansen

Genesis Hansen is the Director of Library & Cultural Services for the City of Mission Viejo, Vice Chair of the Executive Committee for the Santiago Library System, and a member of the Infopeople Advisory Board. She has been involved in many aspects of library service over the course of her career, beginning as a Reference and Young Adult services Librarian, and eventually overseeing Circulation, Technical Services, Reference and Web Services. She was a Eureka! Leadership Institute Fellow and Mentor, and has been involved with CLA in various capacities, serving on the Conference Committee in 2010, 2011, and 2013, and on the Leadership Development Committee for a 3-year term ending in 2015. 

 


 

Cindy Mediavilla

Cindy Mediavilla has been a member of the California Library Association for more than 30 years. During that time, she has served as chair of the continuing education, library education and recruitment, nominating, Begun scholarship, organization and bylaws, and conference planning committees. She also served five years as CLA newsletter editor and is a founding member of the CLA Library History Interest Group. She is currently chair of the California Library Hall of Fame selection committee. Cindy served two terms on the CLA assembly and was CLA president in 2001. Plus she was recently named 2016 CLA Member of the Year.

 

Cindy worked as a public librarian for 18 years before returning to school to get a doctorate in library science. Her areas of expertise are after-school homework programs, outcomes-based planning and evaluation, and the history of California public libraries. Although she retired from the state library in December 2015, she remains active in the profession by teaching at UCLA and freelance consulting. Her MLS and PhD are both from UCLA.


 

Stacey Akahoshi (Student Representative)

Stacey Akahoshi is a Senior Library Technician in youth services at the Santa Barbara Public Library. She is pursuing her MLIS at the University of Washington. 

 

She has been a member of CLA since 2014 and has served on the program committee for CLA conference 2014 and 2017. She has been a Student Interest Group Leader since 2015. She has also served as the UW Student ALA chapter distance representative, MLIS peer advisor, and served on a panel of distance students to answer questions for incoming cohorts at the University of Washington. She looks forward to continuing to grow the Student Interest Group, connecting California students and creating fun events for students to learn more about their future professions.


 

Cecilia Tovar (ALA Chapter Councilor)

Cecilia Tovar is a Principal Librarian at the Santa Monica Public Library and she oversees four branches, as well as both youth and adult services.  Cecilia graduated from the University of Arizona’s School of Information as Knowledge River Scholar, and she has a second Master’s in Education.  Prior to her current position, she worked five years as a Branch Manager with the Yuma County Library District in Arizona, and also as a Branch Manager for the new Pico Branch in Santa Monica.   Cecilia is an active ALA and REFORMA member and she understands the importance of building successful relationships to promote lifelong learning and advocate for access and equity.  Cecilia is highly regarded for her dedicated service to diverse clientele, and in 2015 she was selected as a Mover & Shaker by the Library Journal.  The following year, she was selected for the  Eureka! Leadership Institute in California.
