CLA Scholarship For Minority Students in Memory of Edna Yelland
The CLA Scholarship for Minority Students in Memory of Edna Yelland encourages and supports ethnic minority students in the attainment of a graduate degree in library or information studies and encourages commitment to the improvement of library services to ethnic minority communities.
Edna Yelland graduated from the California State Library School in Sacramento, obtained a County Librarians Certificate and served as the librarian for Tuolumne County and then San Mateo County. She later headed the Cutting Branch of Richmond Public Library and, from this position, became executive secretary of the California Library Association from 1947 to 1963. It is in memory of this gracious woman who worked so hard to promote the goals of the association and of the profession that the Edna Yelland scholarships are awarded. A maximum of three scholarships are awarded each year. Recipients are each awarded $2,500, a one-year student membership to CLA, and honored at the CLA annual conference. Recipients are encouraged to enroll into CLA's Mentoring Program.
The CLA Scholarship for Minority Students in Memory of Edna Yelland is funded by CLA's Edna Yelland Scholarship Fund. Contributions to the fund are tax-deductible and will enable CLA to continue supporting ethnic minority students and encouraging commitment to the improvement of library services to ethnic minority communities in California.

2016 Scholarship Recipients
Jasmin Avila, San Jose State University
Jasmin Avila believes in the power of public libraries to transform, connect and empower our communities. As part of a dedicated team at Santa Cruz Public Libraries, she works as the Programs and Partnerships Administrative Assistant to connect the community with the library through outreach projects, community partnerships, and digital storytelling. Her passions are in early education and bilingual literacy and she stands as a strong advocate for the increase of library services and resources in Spanish.
Jasmin is earning her Masters in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University with a focus in Children's Librarianship. As co-founder of Nopal Media, she is also a community storyteller, utilizing photo and video to share underrepresented stories in the Santa Cruz community. When she is not working or taking pictures you can find her biking around town with her 10-pound chihuaweenie Canela.
Nicole Patch, University of California, Los Angeles
Nicole Patch is a second year graduate student working towards both the MLIS degree and MA in Latin American Studies at UCLA. The dual nature of the program reflects her interest in how the dynamic nature of information can shape history, culture, and society. She explores how marginalized groups of people create, interact with, and utilize information and hopes to identify and address barriers to information in underserved communities. Through equitable access to information Nicole imagines the library as a source of community empowerment that has the power to transform lives at every stage.
Reflecting upon her experience as the daughter of an immigrant single mother in a low-income neighborhood in Southeast Los Angeles, Nicole acknowledges the role of libraries in supporting her current success. Her goal as a future librarian is to further develop the library as a resource for immigrant, first generation, low-income, and queer youth by developing effective outreach strategies that can reach socially excluded non-users. She currently works for YouthBuild Charter School of California as the Student Information Systems Manager and hopes to strengthen her dedication to underserved youth at the library by focusing on improving pathways to higher education and successful careers.
Chloe Van Stralendorff, San Jose State University
Chloe Van Stralendorff is a second year MLIS student at San Jose State University's iSchool. In pursuit of a specialization in Librarianship, her professional goal is to explore the possibilities of diversifying accessibility and aid in the empowerment of resources to underserved communities. As a biracial Indonesian American raised in the foster care system, her determination to achieve in higher education is motivated by the many socio-economic challenges she has faced in her lifetime. This in turn has catalyzed her personal work ethic to serve underprivileged communities with informational resources.
Currently, Chloe is a Library Technician at Anaheim Public Library, and often finds herself on the Bookmobile, making her way into less fortunate neighborhoods in order to provide easy and convenient access to the library’s services. She is also actively seeking new ways of reaching local youth through programming with the Teen & Young Adult Department, organizing activities and events that aim to reach young people and garner interest in reading and socializing. Connecting with her community taught her that delivering public services is an important way to combat social exclusion and marginalization. Ultimately, her professional goal is to obtain an MLIS to further the empowerment of communities through information resources and creating a means for lifelong intellectual growth.
The 2017 scholarship application period has closed.
- be US citizens (or permanent US residents) and permanent California residents;
- be enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's of library and information science or information studies program and have completed one or more courses (applications from students at institutions actively seeking accreditation are also welcome);
- intend to work in a California library upon graduation;
- be a member of one of the following ethnic minority groups: African American or Black; American Indian or Alaska Native; Asian; Latino/Hispanic; Pacific Islander;
- provide a description of your financial need; and
- be available for interview by the Edna Yelland Scholarship Committee. Individuals will be chosen for oral interview based upon the merits of the written application.
How to apply
Applicants should submit the following to CLA:
- An explanation of your current financial situation (including salary, number of dependents, etc.).
- A list of all scholarships and financial aid for which you intend to apply and/or have been awarded for graduate education.
- The names and addresses of the educational institutions you have attended and, for each institution, your highest degree attained (if any), your years of attendance, and your subject or field of study.
- A list of your employers, dates of employment, and a brief description of your responsibilities for any library experience.
- Information you would like to tell us about any volunteer experiences.
- Names and contact information for two professional references.
- An essay discussing your interest in librarianship, your academic or professional goals, and how this scholarship would help achieve those goals. The essay should include all of these topics, be grammatically correct, and be 1,000 words or less.

- The CLA Scholarship for Minority Students in Memory of Edna Yelland is coordinated by CLA's Edna Yelland Scholarship Committee.
- The committee reserves the right not to award scholarships if qualified candidates are not found.
- The amount of each scholarship may change depending on available funds and the financial need of applicants.
- Award recipients will be asked to submit a photograph to be used in award publicity.
- Applications and all supplementary materials must be received by 5:00pm on the submission deadline.
