Researching and Writing Your Library’s History

Is your library planning to celebrate a big anniversary in the near future? Have you been asked to write a library history? Do you like to do historical research? If yes, then the CLA Library History Interest Group has a “Spring Fling” workshop just for you! Join us to learn how to research and write your library’s history. Presenters will share their favorite research strategies and techniques, followed by a hands-on demonstration of essential primary sources. About the Presenters

Michael George is a reference librarian at Torrance’s Katy Geissert Civic Center Library. He holds a Master’s in History from USC and has attended library school at UCLA with an emphasis on reference and archival work. He has worked with the Toyota USA Archives and Library as well as the California State University Chancellors Papers. Mike is a past historian for the Torrance Historical Society and now serves the board as an advisory member. He was instrumental in the digitization of more than 90 years of local history and is passionate about programming that helps patrons explore the unique history of their community—such programs have included “Centennial Minutes”, “History in Your Pajamas” and “If These Walls could Talk.” When he has spare time, Mike enjoys rooting against college football teams in gold or white helmets.  

Monique Sugimoto is an archivist and the local history librarian at the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD).  Monique works with local government agencies, organizations and family members to collect materials that document the unique history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Prior to joining PVLD, Monique was an archivist with the National Archives at Riverside.  She is an active member of the Society of California Archivists.  In 2006, Monique received her MLIS from UCLA, where her focus was on archival informatics.  

Cindy Mediavilla is a part-time library programs consultant for the California State Library and part-time lecturer at the UCLA Department of Information Studies. She is also a well-known workshop trainer. One of her areas of expertise is California library history, about which she has published numerous articles. She was president of the California Library Association in 2001 and was co-founder of CLA's Library History Interest Group. Cindy's MLS and doctorate are both from UCLA.

 

Please note:

  • Refunds cannot be issued within three weeks of an event taking place.
  • All refunds are subject to a $25 processing fee.
  • Events costing $25 and under are not eligible for refunds.
  • If any early bird rate is offered, mail-in registrations must be received by the CLA office by 5pm on the day of the deadline to receive the early-bird registration rate.
  • CLA member rates: person must be an Individual Voting or Supporting CLA member to receive the discounted member rate for workshops or webinars. 
  • Group rates for webinars: one person must register for the entire group and the login information will be sent to that person. If the person registering the group is a CLA member the group is entitled to the member rate. Group rates are intended for four or more individuals viewing the webinar together. The login information you receive may only be used on one machine.
  • Webinars will be recorded and the recording will be made available to all registrants at a later date at no extra fee.
  • Your registration for a Spring Fling program constitutes permission to utilize photos taken of you at the event for news, promotion, and similar purposes.
