Robert Karatsu is the recently-retired Library Director of the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library, which under his leadership won the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the nation’s highest honor that can be bestowed on a museum or library. Robert has also been a two-term mentor for the Eureka Leadership Institute and was recently named the 2013 “Local Hero” for the greater Los Angeles chapter of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.
Robert is honored to be the President of the California Library Association and is looking forward to doing whatever he can to give back to the profession and to make CLA an even stronger, more impactful organization.
Robert lives in Pasadena with his wife Vinita and beautiful (if slightly neurotic) calico cat Monet. And he is more than willing to back you up on his guitar if you want to perform at next year’s conference talent show or cook for you if you bid on a silent auction package!
Misty Jones is the Director for the San Diego Public Library System overseeing the Central Library and 35 branch libraries. Previously, she was the Library’s Deputy Director for Central Division which included overseeing the move, opening, and operations of the Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common. A graduate of the Masters of Library and Information Science program from University of South Carolina, Misty started her library career at the Greenville County Library in South Carolina. She then worked for nine years at the Charleston County Library, working her way up through several progressively responsible positions.
Misty believes libraries are the great equalizer, always inclusive and never exclusive. She thrives on change and believes that the strength of libraries is in their ability to redefine themselves to fit public need. It is because of this that she committed herself to library advocacy. While at Charleston County Library she founded and chaired Libraries Out Loud, a grassroots advocacy program to help restore funding to the library system by promoting libraries to the public as well as legislators and other elected officials throughout the state. After moving to San Diego she immediately sought the opportunity to continue this as a member of the California State Library Legislative Committee and Advocacy Sub Committee. She is very honored and excited to be the President Elect for CLA.
Beth is a full time instructor in the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Beth received her MLIS from the University of Denver and worked for Denver Public Schools and Douglas County Libraries in Colorado before moving to San Leandro, CA in the fall of 2008. She specializes in materials and services for youth.
She was active in the Colorado Association of Libraries serving as it’s President, Vice-President and Past President as well as the annual Conference Chair and Chair of the Publications Committee.
Beth is married to Mark Estes and has one daughter, Whitney, and two grand daughters Lorelei and Tabitha. She enjoys walking with her dog Scout, reading, wine tasting and exploring the bay area.
Hillary Theyer grew up with a librarian in the family (her mom) and started work in a public library at age 15. She attended UC Santa Cruz, then library school at UCLA, graduating in 1994 with her MLS. In 2003 she went to Cal State Long Beach for a Masters in Public Administration. She has worked as a children's librarian and branch manager for Beverly Hills Public Library, Sacramento Public Library, and the Palos Verdes Library District and is now in charge of Public Services for the Torrance Public Library. She has an interest in organizational psychology and public sector management. Hillary is also an avid romance reader, and especially likes those set in Tudor England.
Rebecca Forth is the Assistant to the Director at Sonoma County Library, in her seventh year at SCL, and every bit as excited as on the first day—maybe more! Rebecca holds degrees in art and art history from UC Davis, as well as a degree in culinary arts from the California Culinary Academy. She received her MLIS from San Jose State University.
Passionate about libraries of all stripes—especially California libraries—Rebecca has served on the CLA Conference Planning Committee for 2013 and 2014 and also serves on Califa’s Products and Services Advisory Committee.
Rebecca is deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board of CLA, and looks forward to serving our California library community at every level during her term and beyond. Her goal is connecting libraries to their communities and to one another in new and interesting ways.
Rebecca lives in Santa Rosa, and enjoys trail running, cooking, and eating.

Born in Santa Barbara, Kathy spent her high school and college years in Manitoba, Canada. After graduating from Brandon University she and received her Master of Science in Library and Information Management from the University of Southern California. After working briefly as a public librarian and as a corporate librarian, her career shifted away from libraries and she spent 15 years in a variety of management and executive positions in the mining and manufacturing industries in New Zealand, Australia, and Kentucky.
In 2003 she returned to her public service and library roots when she became Director of the Palos Verdes Library District in January, 2004. PVLD is an independent Special District Library governed by a publicly-elected Board of Trustees and serves the four cities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Kathy’s is active in community and professional organizations. She is currently a member of the Infopeople Advisory Board and the California Special Districts Association Legislative Committee, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Center of the South Bay. She has served on the CLA Legislative and Finance Committees and on several CLA taskforces.
Kathy’s husband, Don, is a Community Library Manager for the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Outside of work Kathy enjoys swimming, spending time at the beach, traveling, watching sunsets, reading (of course), and just hanging out at home.
Tonya Kennon is Library Director for the City of Riverside. Tonya also serves as on the CA State Library’s Early Learning with Families (ELF) Advisory Committee and has served as a mentor for the Inland Empire Librarians Educated to Advance Diversity (IE LEADS) program and as a selection committee member for the Cal Humanities CA Reads program.
Tonya Kennon is Director at Riverside Public Library where she oversees the administration of library services to a community of 314,000 via one main library and seven branches. Tonya holds a BA in English from California Baptist University and an MLIS from San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science.
In her spare time, Tonya enjoys spending time with family, cheering on the Los Angeles Lakers, a sunny day at the beach (any day at the beach, really), and confusing people by introducing them to her twin sister Tanya.
Jan Sanders, Director of Libraries and Information Services for the City of Pasadena, came to town in 2005 from Spokane, WA. She has been in libraries for more than 30 years, serving as children’s librarian, bookmobile librarian, branch manager, community college librarian, and library construction supervisor before becoming a director in 1990. Her career has led her to Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Washington, and now California.
Jan has always been an advocate of free expression and access and was one of 100 people named to the Intellectual Freedom Hall of Fame in 1999. She is active in the American Library Association, where she has served in a variety of roles including National Chair for Federal Legislative Action, Membership Chair and Governing Council. She has also long been affiliated with the Public Library Association of America, where she served as President 2007-2008. Jan served the California Library Association as a member of the Legislative Committee and Chair of the 2011 State Conference Committee. Jan is also working with the California State Library and the office of Senator Carol Liu to help analyze and define sustainable funding for California libraries.
Because she believes a librarian is first and foremost accountable to the community she serves, Jan is also active in a number of community organizations. She is a board member and committee chair for Pasadena Rotary Club, works with the Chamber of Commerce and the Pasadena Arts Council, is a member of the Vestry at All Saints Episcopal Church, and is a past member of the board for Leadership Pasadena. She serves as chair of a networking group, Executive Directors’ Roundtable, as well as serving on the board of the Pasadena Museum of History and the Pasadena: City of Learning Committee. Jan also takes every opportunity to speak about (and for) libraries, and often addresses classes at Pasadena Community College about becoming a librarian and what that means. Jan teaches a PhD-level class titled “Managerial Leadership” for Simmons College (Boston).
Jan is a flexible, visionary leader and is excited about the possibilities open for today’s libraries.
Kimberlee Wheeler works in youth services at the Paradise Branch of the Butte County Library in northern California. She is in her third year at SJSU's School of Information where she is pursuing her MLIS, and is very eager to represent students and library supporters in the year ahead as Student Representative to the Board. A member of CLA since 2010, Kimberlee is inspired by the ability of librarians to act together for the greater good of the communities they serve, something she first observed at CLA conferences.
With an interest in youth services and California library history, Kimberlee has also served on CLA's Begun Scholarship committee for the last two years, and has recently become a member of the California Library Hall of Fame committee. She looks forward to interacting with CLA's Student Interest Group in order to generate greater involvement and membership from both northern and southern California, with an emphasis on uniting library students through social media outreach, Spring Fling event opportunities and the 2015 conference in Pasadena, Reimagine, Reinvent.
Patty Wong was appointed County Librarian/Chief Archivist of the Yolo County Library in California in January 2008. She is responsible for a seven-branch system and the Archives and Records Center for Yolo County in the Central Valley. Ms. Wong is also a part-time faculty at the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University specializing in trendspotting and professional socialization and grant writing, and continues to serve as a consultant for libraries and local government in the areas organizational development, leadership, managing change, youth development, fundraising, cultural diversity, developing homework centers in libraries, and developing joint ventures and collaborations between libraries and community agencies.
Ms. Wong is an active member of the American Library Association where she currently serves as Co-Chair of former ALA President Molly Raphael's Presidential Initiative – Empowering Voices: Communities Speak Out for Libraries which builds upon Camila Alire's focus on Library Advocacy from Frontline Staff. Patty was a Member of the ALA Executive Board and has held a number of elected and appointed positions. Recent accolades include nomination as a Library Journal 2007 Mover and Shaker and the 2006 Joint Conference of Librarians of Color Advocacy Award for the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association. In March 2010 she was named one of two 2010 Women of the Year for State Senator Lois Wolk's district (5th-CA).
